Horrifying Grinding Noise

Hey all,

FX is at 29k miles and first major problem/annoyance has began to occur. When i am driving, at times (no brakes compressed) there seems to be a grinding noise coming from the suspension in the front right (passenger) section. It has been on and off randomly so its hard to duplicate, but when it does happen, it has gotten louder and louder. When the noise occurs and i press the brakes, the noise is still there and does not get louder or change at all. The faster i drive, the faster the grinding is so i think it has something to do with the rotors/brakes. Recently the noise has been in both the front right and left sections of the suspension. Did a quick search and the only related thread i could find was this (///6297). However the difference is that mine happens not only when im turning, but almost when im just driving straight. Going to get this checked out soon, but was hoping for some feedback and direction to be prepared. thanks iS!

p.s. the new smilies are awesome :ninja::sluggish::tongue (2)::smug::smile (2)::alien::eek.::bomb:

I've read a bunch of threads about this here on IS.

Definitely your wheel bearing. Easiest to replace the hub. OEM = Timken

///7954

There is some discussion in this thread you should read before replacing the hub

///5670

If you want to replace the hub yourself

///7595

thanks jumbo! much appreciated. Two questions though

1) My fx is only at 29k miles, but as Ed pointed out in his thread, these bearings can go at anywhere from 30k - 100k miles. Is there any reason why mine would go earlier? driving style perhaps? but im not too sure..

2) i didnt notice this noise till i rotated the tires myself (front -> back and vice versa). Would this affect the bearing in any way? May i mention that i noticed the noise a few hours after i rotated my tires and went driving around... but idk see how i could have damaged the bearings like this. My alignment seems fine however

1) I think it's odd the bearing would go out this early, but I wouldn't think it is anything you would have done to cause it. Maybe it wasn't greased up properly - or the grease has broken down from some kind of solvent, dirt or debris... could be a bunch of things. If you are still under warranty, this should be covered.

2) Tire rotation doesn't touch the hubs. In fact, you won't ever touch the hubs unless you have taken your rotors off. That you started hearing the noise just after rotation would worry me too - but if it is the wheel bearing, it wouldn't be related to tire rotation.

thanks again jumbo. in that case, if its covered under warranty, its time for the g37 loaner mobile!!!

I had this grinding noise after I changed my brakes and rotors. Found out it was coming from the shim cover not fitting the new brake pads properly, so I took the shim cover off and the noise was gone. Not sure if you worked on your brakes recently, but if you did, I'd check this. It's easy to tell because the outer part of my rotors had grinding marks. Did you touch the brake pads at all when you rotated your tires?

It could be the dust shield around the rotor. Did you by any chance hit it while putting the wheel back on?

hmm i will have to check that out... thanks john

roy, i didnt touch the brakes recently, but i need new brakes pretty badly (already squeaking).

That happened to me when I replaced my shocks recently. I bumped the inner cover at some point and upon test driving heard what sounded like metal on metal brake grinding. I pulled back into the driveway, jacked it up again and found the inner dust cover rubbing on the rotor. I bent it back into place easily with my hands and the issue was cured.

I mean, I HOPE you guys are right, but there's a difference between a dust shield rub and a, "horrifying grinding noise". Def check the dust shields tho - hope that's all it is!

I've heard others with bad wheel bearings describe the sound as a "jet engine" which to me would be more horrifying than the dust shield sound. Just thinking out loud.

^I agree, and pman's symptoms don't exactly coincide with my experience, but the dust shield sound is surprisingly brutal and REALLY easy to check out/fix. Definitely make that step 1 in your investigation.

going to start exploring what the problem is tomorrow. I might have the dealer take a look at it if i cannot find the problem since they have to fix some other parts under warranty (again). Thanks so much again for the help!
