Hood and Tail gate lift rods not holding..

Has anyone replaced the gas lift rod / supports for the hood and/or rear hatch? I don't have a power lift gate and the gas shocks are going bad. They close on me so I have to do a quick grab and go from the rear hatch before it cuts my head off. Anyhow, the local parts store has them for $70+ each and $100 from the dealer. Anyone know if there are cheaper replacements? Thanks!

I had my hood shocks replaced with direct replacement from AutoZone. Took a day for them to get it in stock. Wasn't expensive.

Actually work amazingly well. The more you bend them the more it holds. Usually doesn't take that much though

Haha..isn't a ghetto fix an understood quick and temporary fix? Thanks for the responses as I went for the eBay ones. A seller had both front and rear sets with "lifetime" warranty and had good ratings. Both sets for under $100!

Wow what coincidental timing, both of mine appear to be on their way out. My car is 3 years newer though, which is kinda weird why they started to crap out so early.

I have been contemplating just pulling the gas shocks out of the hood and using a stick to prop it up. Shave weight....:ninja:

But I will definitely need the rear hatch shocks sooner rather than later.

It might be because its colder where you live? I notice mine are worse when it gets colder outside ..since the gas doesn't expand as much? During the summer the are fine but I don't want to hassle with it off and on.

I agree ROLLA. I noticed the same thing yesterday when it was 1 degree F. As soon as I opened the trunk the door fell on my neck. Luckily I have a broad neck, other wise I would be in a neck brace right now!

UPDATE: So I got the front and rear hood / lift supports and the hood supports took 2 seconds to replace. The rear lift gates are different story as I bought the ones WITHOUT brackets and you have to use existing brackets. You have to CUT OFF the metal round "sockets" on the old lifts to remove them as seen here:

I don't have a grinder cut off tool but only an oscillating tool. I didn't want to risk scarring the ball so I am exchanging for the rear lift supports that comes WITH brackets!

They're about $30 more but saves a lot of time! Hope this helps anyone wanting to replace the rear lift supports.

Thanks for the update. I noticed my hood doesn't go up as easy when it's cold. Might be worth the extra $30 to avoid any hassle.
