Hood and Tail gate lift rods not holding..

Thanks for the update. I noticed my hood doesn't go up as easy when it's cold. Might be worth the extra $30 to avoid any hassle.
It's well worth it if you're having some problems as I can tell a big difference from my old hood supports vs new ones. I can feel pressure from the new rods when I try to close it as oppose to the old ones just almost giving out with the slightest pressure down on the hood.

I contacted that seller on ebay few months back and they're not even in stock. Only reason they're $250 is because he doesn't wanna lose the history on the product, so once he's back on stock the price will go down again. Mine have been bad for a while now and got hit on the head a few times in a way which isn't even funny. Need to get this done so i'm probably just gonna get them from the dealer.

You would want a smooth bend, just enough to cause more friction between the shaft and seals. A crimp would jam up some and may stop it from closing/opening properly.

When you say bending do you mean putting a crimp or a smooth bend? Gotta do something for now until a better deal pops up. Even eBay struts are running $250 shipped.

My Hood does not hold up on its own and i use Vise-grips on the inner rod to hold it up at the moment...

Found front replacements on Ebay for $30... Gonna get them later this week.

I think on Partsgeek or one of the normal auto chains had 3 sets for sale one cost like $90 and the others were $50 a set

Hi all, resurrecting this thread because recently my liftgate struts have been failing. Southbay Infiniti originally quoted me $315 for replacement/repairs, and later hiked it up to $500! That is a little crazy, so looking for an alternative.

As this thread stipulates, they can't be replaced by run-of-the-mill struts because of the extra joint. I was happy to find the links to the original parts here, but it turns out they have all been sold out. I can't find a part number, which makes it hard to look for them. The various sites that sell them let you search by vehicle, but you end up with regular struts that need the modifications mentioned here.

Does anybody know what to look for? Thanks.

[edit:]
Braindead this morning. I looked up the part # on the strut itself (I know, right?), Tokico 90452-CG010. Next question would be, is this something I could do myself? I'm not exactly a handyman, but not a total moron either. I read about cutting something with power tools etc. here, and that is something I wouldn't be able to do.

I need to get new hood struts as well. Had my hood fall down while doing an oil change recently and crack my funnel. I noticed it again this past weekend doing an oil change. I just ordered some stuff for the Z and FX and I knew there was something else I needed.

I"m pretty sure i changed out my fronts with ebay ones 2yrs ago. no problems. my rear struts are getting weak though now.

Easily changed out my front struts with a pair I bought from Ebay for 19.99. They work great, perhaps maybe a little too strong. It takes some effort to push the hood back down now.

My rear gate stays up, but I have to pull to get it up. Will probably replace those soon too

Yeah, I found the new ones to be pretty strong. The hood flies up and rattles once it hits the top now. Took some pictures for the install.

Use a screwdriver to pull back the tab that holds them on and they slide right off. Probably the hardest part, especially if you're trying to hold up the hood with one hand at the same time. You can either hold back the clip and pull the strut off, or if you pull the clip far enough it will catch in the "open" position and you can pull it off as well.

After I got it off I cleaned the dirty mount and then regreased them.

And new one on. Do one at a time, and recommend having someone hold the hood when you pull off the old ones. I tried propping it, and the prop fell over. One new one can hold up the hood, but chances are one old one won't be able to.

I purchased these off Amazon for $40 and free shipping here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NUJ2QZA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00
They mention 1-2 weeks I think, or you can buy expedited. I did not get expedited and they shipped same day I ordered and arrived two days later from SoCal.

This is the companies website: http://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/
And this is the product on their site: http://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/st...rged-infiniti-hood-lift-support-strut-01224w/

I guess they have their own branded version. Only difference I see is it's a little cheaper and doesn't say made in USA. Their Amazon prices were cheaper that on their site.

The NRG are nice, but they're a bit short which leads to a smaller opening that I kept bumping my head at the hood. I believe they're 1" shorter than stock. I ended up order their extension.

Just this standard Mobil 1 grease that I use on just about anything needing grease that doesn't specify a certain type. I don't know that it's needed, but it seemed like metal on metal should have something, and I think they had old grease on them.
