Hey

New member from the UK, where your average Infiniti is probably almost as rare as a Veyron. The Infiniti forums here in the UK are obviously not where you head to talk Infiniti as it's not unusual to find just several posts a year, hence why I have joined Infinitiscene.

The vast majority of the UK is sadly fixated on the usual German brands, which is plain dumb if it means they miss out on some great cars from other manufacturers but then these are often the same people who believe a car says something about them. I just buy what I like, have a CL63 for weekends, I recently sold my M6 Gran Coupe and I have also very happily owned Lexus in the past, so I am no way biased towards a brand or country but I do love my cars. I checked Autotrader today and you can take your pick from a grand total of 406 Infiniti, 40,717 BMW, 31,857 Audi, 32,781 Mercedes or 2,889 Lexus!

So I've had my 2013 FX30D S Premium for just over a month and it has exceeded my expectations on many levels, especially quality and comfort, which can't be beaten for the price. A base spec 2013 Cayenne 3.0D of the same mileage is around $23k more on the used market and by base spec I mean halogen headlights, part manual seats, 18" alloys, no sunroof or anything else for that matter. Start looking for optional extras and you will pay thousands more!!

I think it's a fair comparison as I previously owned a Cayenne and of course the Porsche has some more upscale materials but nothing that justifies the $23k difference, especially when comparing two 3.0 V6 diesels of comparable power. I often see new Macan's driving around with the standard halogen headlights in 2018, which on a $70k car says an awful lot about the value many people place on certace badges here in the UK. Safe to say they aren't enjoying ventilated memory seats, keyless entry, BOSE, sunroof, adaptive xenons, adaptive dampers, adaptive cruise or 4WS!

omg!

our new qx70 D is the wifes car! and she is in her words 'downgrading' from a 4.5L Porsche Cayenne 2006! which i feel is not the case at all.

When a macan is seen on the road, she sighs as if she is 'missing out'.
Mind you, none of us have driven a macan...and would not dream of parting with any of my earnings for one.

Yes there are materials in the qx70 that are less premium...but price....

Thanks for the welcome Don.

I'm sure you will agree the massive savings over the competition more than make up for some of the interior plastic, which are still very well put together.

i dont have a problem with the interior plastics per say...the big difference I think is the 'weight' or at least the 'feeling heavier' gives that significance. For eg; the front door of the cayenne feels like it weighs as much as a small car, where as the QX70 feels like its half of that. Things like that :)

I completely understand what you mean but then I've moved from the Cayenne to the FX via a Range Rover Sport, so the difference isn't that great.

Don't suppose your owners manual shows the fluid capacities for the differentials and transfer case as I am intending to get these changed but my manual only lists the specifications for these? I did post the question on the forum as I believe the US manual gives the quantities but zero response after two days.

Kind of odd that my manual specifies mineral oil for the front diff and synthetic for the rear as I have read of owners on here using synthetic in both.

hey, so just checked my manual...has the specs like yours...NO capacity! sorry mate!

Good of you to check for me Don.

So are you planning any upgrades on the Infiniti?

No probs!

most likely just wheels...its currently on 21" and id be a fool to pay for a set of 21"s vs 20s! 21s here are expensive and not many brands other than the really expensive brands make em. So yeah, going down to 20s. I 'may' paint the roof rail black...just depends on 'time'...

Funny my wife the other day says to me out of no where that it feels like the infiniti is just a 'temporary' car....i went silent...in my head i was swearing! haha
but i think she still misses her cayenne...i for one....dont!

That cayenne per week in petrol costs her 120 - 140 AUD!
THe infiniti costs her 100 AUD for 2 weeks!!!!!

NO brainer! And i think the infiniti looks sexier!

From what I remember, the 2nd Gen FX has aluminum doors to lighten the car... Probably why you think it has a "light" feeling, is because it IS much lighter... The FX was designed for performance... So much so that they didn't want to put in an auto-hatch in the rear till they HAD to in 2012 because of the competition... They felt the extra weight in the back at such a high height really put off the balance of the car...

Sounds like your wife is already planning the FX replacement but hopefully she will begin to appreciate its many qualities despite her love for all things Porsche.

I too am enjoying the 30d fuel economy which is verging on miracle like after way too many trips to refuel a supercharged V8 Range Rover averaging 13.8 mpg, although I still have a V8 Merc with a similar appetite for super unleaded. I suspect the Cayenne 4.2D would make a very nice future replacement but then I'm back to sifting through classified adverts trying to find a car with the options I want, which can be a pain, or worrying about stuff like the PDCC failing.

My car came with 4 x new Michelin Latitude M&S tyres at a cost of around £1,300 to the previous owner, which is a great bonus despite them being quite noisy and somewhat deficient in grip when pushing on. I believe a 275 tyre works well on the FX and it will give you many more options at a much lower cost than replacing 4 x tryes plus 4 x wheels. I'll go 275 myself when these tyres are dead as I like the big alloys.

I'm going to attempt some Dynamat or similar soundproofing under the rear bench and in the spare wheel well, which contains just the battery and BOSE amp over here. It's the one area I feel a little disappointed as they got so much right with this car.

I'm going to add a small external amp to the BOSE sub, replace the rear door speakers (already purchased) and the dash mid/tweeters along with soundproofing whilst the door cards are off.

Illuminated door sills on order.

Maybach style Alcantara head restraint cushions for the rear reclining seats.

Full LED interior bulb swap already completed and it looks years newer.

I will be changing the very dim door pull LED's to a much brighter coloured bulb along with both the mirror puddle and number plate bulbs.

I have already purchased a used PlasmaCluster ioniser as it was not fitted to UK models despite us receiving the ACCS with air quality sensor. I am hoping it's plug and play as it comes with a harness but I suspect it will either need coding or a new control unit behind the dash, which I'm not doing. Do you get the ioniser in Australia?

I changed the yellow factory bulbs with Osram Cool Blue Intense replacements after a mate suggested I should switch on the headlights.....which were already on!

I bought some combined LED front DRL/Indicator bulbs, which are one unit and use the indicator housing for the DRL but switch to amber flashing when the indicators/hazards are activated.

That's it for now but a remap and spacers might be nice....;)

I like the focus and attention to detail made by the engineers at Nissan as it shines through when you drive the car. Shame it didn't sell in many markets but then Infiniti are all but invisible in the UK with little marketing and just 4 or 5 dealers nationwide.

pretty much invisible here too in Australia....we get stares and questions on what the hell the car is!! Love it!

Dynamat has worked very well for quite a few members... Several posts on how to do it posted up here... While you have the door panels off to replace the speakers, you may as well dynamat the doors too...

With the three dash speakers, I've heard many people complain that when they replace the middle one, the sound gets very mid-focused... So most have either completely deleted the middle speaker, or put the OEM ones back in... Adding an amp to the BOSE subwoofer has worked very well for many people... I'm leaning more towards getting low profile subwoofers installed under both driver seats... I think I should be able to fit a 10" under each seat, and they come with amps built-in so I can keep my wiring clean... Replacing the door speakers will be high on my list too, and then the dash speakers a little lower :P

wow...you guys like to update your sounds! i actually thought the sound system that came with the qx70D is great! i really like it... :)

Yes I have heard the FX responds well to some additional soundproofing, which can only help on the refinement front. Plenty of inexpensive options on Ebay to experiment with and without breaking the bank. I have used Brown Bread in the past with good results.

I will only be changing the two corner dash speakers (mid/treble) and I will leave the centre speaker alone as it's the other two that dominate and will likely benefit from a better quality rereplaceme. I have Audison AP6.5" 2 ohm woofers going in the rear doors if they ever turn up but they are currently missing in the post.

I can't help but tinker here and there, so it's quite natural for me to want to improve the sound system just a little. It's far from bad but i think it is built to a budget and a low one at that, so hopefully some tweaks will only improve it.

Illuminated kick plates arrived today and I have found some aluminium look electric seat control covers online, which are meant for a Nissan with what looks like the same seat controls, so fingers crossed they will fit.
