Help me buy my new FX35 - Ohio

Hi guys/girls,

I am considering buying a 2003 fx35 AWD. This one is silver with about 160k. Looks like it has been well cared for but does need a new engine. Hoping someone here can answer a few questions for me before I pull the trigger this weekend and buy it. From the hours of research i've done I really expect to love this baby once it's up and running well.

1. Replacement engine cost.
a. Ebay - $1000 for a lower mileage engine (Less than 100k)
b. Car-Part.com - Engines seem to go from $1000 upwards to $2500. I would not pay more than $1500 for a junkyard engine
2. Engine replacement
a. Have you guys pulled the engine from the top? I have a 2 car garage and all of the necessary tools. However, all of the posts i've seen regarding swapping engine or pictures i've found show the crossmember being removed from the bottom and the trans, engine, differential all being lowered as one assembly out of the bottom of the car. I do not have a lift and this really isn't an option for me.

3. I was considering offering $3500 for the car as is. Do you guys think that is a fair offer?

I'll post some pics to picasa soon

Thanks!
Nick

What's wrong with the old engine can it be rebuilt.Any engine for a 1000 to 2500 will most likely need to be rebuilt as well and can become quite expensive depending on condition.

Really hope you get it so I have an Ohio iS bud! Where you from? If you need to look at my FX just let me know. It's a 45 but could help you out some I'm sure!

Also, I have a lift if you need to use it. I don't know how long you'd need it for though.

That's not a bad price for effectively a rolling chassis. Can't the engine come out the front? I thought that was the way to do it.

Hey Guys - thanks for all of the quick replies. I am in Columbus, Ohio Dave...

I'd love to get a lift, I have a garage with 114" height. I found a 2 post lift for garages with low ceiling height. I just happen to be working in Indianapolis, IN through the weeks and found these guys who sell lifts for $1400 via ebay. From the research i've done @ garagejournal.com all of the guys there seem to be happy with them.

I'll be stopping in the showroom in Indy if you guys want me to check anything out for you. I plan on visiting this guy tomorrow to see the FX35 in person. Pics coming next!

Dealer diag'd as bad engine...not sure if its locked up or still runs. I have the tools and ability to rebuild if necessary but looks like $900 in parts and probably another $8-1200 in machine work. I havent seen the car yet girlfriend went to dealer and took pics

Greg smith is the bomb. I have bought 2 lifts from him. I needed to go larger the second time. Both times, there service was awesome. Their equipment really holds up well.
