Brought my car into Pearson Infinite because of Check engine light came on.
They told me the grounds to a terminal may be dirty or disconnected and want to charge me $500 to clean them off.
Is this something I can do myself?
Please help!:confused.:

I would say - absolutely. Did they say which contacts or where? If they won't tell you take it to a trusted standalone shop in your area and ask for a second opinion. Cleaning terminals is a snap, with a small wire brush/sandpaper and spray contact cleaner. I've never done it on the FX but I have done it on a variety of other cars.

Sounds like a potential case of dealership thievery.

They said they need to take the seat apart, the dash off etc to get to the ground contacts and thats why it costs so much. You think any reg mechanic can do this?

Sounds as if dealer is telling the OP it is a lot more complicated than just battery hook ups....need more data.

what are the problems that are occuring requiring them to check all of the car ground contacts.

and what did the check engine code come up as... if it is ground associated I would let them do it or try it myself but you need a service manual that you can get online.

I think I've seen several mentions of a ground problem behind the dash that requires dash removal. not the first time this has come up.

I've had my dash out myself & never noticed this ground but wasn't really looking for anything either so can't say much for sure, but if it really does require dash removal the $500 from a dealer is probably about right... if it's bs then it's just coincidental that several have had the same thing told to them I guess

Code U1000...

I have this code very sporadically. Once or twice a year. There are 2 grounds located behind the dash, that requires the dash to come out. A master mechanic told me he thinks mine a a little loose causing my issues....and that if I could live with it once or twice a year...then leave it till it gets worse. $500 is actually a really good deal if that is the code they are coming up with. Metro Infiniti quoted me $1000!

They said there are several "Terminals" in the car located in various places. and the error code coming up states that one of the grounds is not connecting or dirty or loose.

PS last year they replaced the dasboard because of bubbling, do you think they might have jostled loose a wire?
Thanks
