Could your local body shop make them? That is a very, very easy part to make in fiberglass or even carbon fiber. Or check with a stereo shop, they work with fiberglass all the time. Even a one off would be less than $500. I fabricated an entire headlight intake out of fiberglass for a turbo set up once. It was maybe $15 in supplies and a few hours.
I wouldn't shy away. I like them.
I'd like to see some for 1st gen, but I wouldn't put them on a red car. Black and silver looks best.
With such low projected sale numbers, I can easily see how the $450-$500 price tag is justified. (strickly coming from a manufacturing sense).
Stuff costs money to make these days. I'd rather pay more money for a tooled production quality part than hunting under every rock for a cheaper fabricated part.
Haha, those days are way behind me. Back in the day, I had an automotive aftermarket business so in my free time at my shop, I'd work on my cars. When you have access to lots of tools, it's easier to get things done. Plus it's easier to make one part for your own car than it is to fabricate them for sale. With my own car, I could trim, sand and refit. With a production part, it has to come out of the mold right every time.
For anyone who really wants to, this is not terribly hard. Protect the headlight w/ tape and foil (tape alone will not protect the headlight, I found this out the hard way). Then just start glassing; make it roughly the shape you want and when it's all cured, trim it to shape. A little body filler and you're good to go.
A stereo shop that works with fiberglass all day long could knock this out pretty easily. A full fiberglass stereo setup is much more complex than eyelids.
