Headlight Aiming

I searched around the site and the net but couldn't find a simple and easy to read diagram of how to aim the headlights.

The service manual says to measure at 10 meters but the other numbers are confusing.

Anyone have the correct measurements or height? I dont' want to go by what seems correct or trial and error.

Thanks!

well the good thing is that we can raise & lower the beam a bit from the dash, so ideally I start with making sure there both sides are even to each other, then when the knob is all the way up (headlights at highest aiming from the dash) I like the beam to be right up to the top of an average cars trunk lid at a carlength or two... turn them down a little they still light the road well... try it out a bit & if you think it needs to go a little up or down do it on a garage door again & just make sure you keep both sides even to each other.. aimed all the way up it should be close to the same height as the headlight itself from several feet away, then a few notches down should be fine for everyday driving

Thanks guys! That makes things alot easier.

One thing I did notice with the pre-recall headlights compared to the recall ones is that they don't light up the road as much. You get less side lighting and the cutoff line has the two mountains whereas the recall lights have a more wider moutain. I wish i had two projectors side by side from each to compare but one thing for sure is that the recall lights have a different shield to the pre-recall ones.

I'm going to try the D2S bulb spacer mod that gets more light output and see if that resolves it.

Once again I learned something new about my FX.
The other night I felt like my headlights could be adjusted up a bit. Then I saw this thread, heck I did not know we could do this. I checked and mine was adjusted as low as they could go. It is now fixed.

Thanks Gentlemen, for this thread.

Omg...it just hit me...now I get the chart!! So you have to measure the height from the ground, to the center of the headlight and whatever that is use that as you base value. So say its 30 inches from the ground to the center of the headlight.

Now you park your car 10meters from a wall with a flat level surface and mark 30 inches on the wall making that your base line.

Then mark another line 0.67 inches below that and another line 1.69 inches below the 30 inch mark.

Those two lines are the allowable aiming area. So the 0.67 line from the 30 inch line is the highest you should set the top of the light cutoff and the 1.69 mark is the lowest you can set the top of the light cutoff too.

Remember the 30 inches is just a number I came up with, it all depends if you lowered your car or not or tires and pressure, etc etc. Just measure your lights center. I think there is a small round circle indicating the center. If not, use your projector's center as the headlight's center.

Be sure to set your headlight aiming control to 0, that's where it should be when aiming.

yeah, that's why I said aim them just below the headlight height. you can kind of see in that diagram that all the way up at the highest setting the projection is almost 90deg angle, meaning straight ahead... if you aim them like that with the knob all the way up then you should be good in the usable range...

I waited until it was dark and went to my local school. I drove up to the side of a brick wall, and adjusted the cutoff so it was level with the bricks. I then drove and did the same thing to the other headlight.

The cut off was just right so I don't blind on coming traffic or the car in front of me.

Newbie here. I recently replaced my bulbs, and ever since then they have been blinding people:mad.:. Now I can go in and adjust. REALLY APPRECIATE THE INFO!!!!!!! Love this site!! :top:

You can use the headlight aiming knob to do some fine adjustment. If that won't do for you, then use the pages below to re-aim your headlight.

Ha, didn't see John has posted these pages. Oh well, what the heck. Some are too lazy to scroll to previous pages before asking the question!

Shouldn't your left headlight be slightly lower than your right? That's how the OEM setting is.
That prevents you from blinding oncoming traffic since they are coming towards you on the left side.

Would you happen to have the schematic and directions for aiming 2013 FX37 headlights? Thanks!!

These are for 2010. Should be that same for 2013
