Hard Braking

Today i was about to run through a yellow almost turning red, and saw a cop waiting at the light. I was going to go for it, then realized and slammed onto the brakes as hard as i could and heard this grinding noise like ceramic tiles rubbing against each other. After that the brakes were smooth again. I'm guessing it's the antilock brakes. Any suggestions?

Yes it was the ABS.

If you feel a herky jerky sensation when you press the brake hard it's the ABS kicking in..

ya, its almost like the brake is pulsating back at you. its a scary feeling at first. you want to let off, but just gotta push harder. errr, ya, ignore that last part.
