Gutted Muffler Mutation

Hey all,

so I thought I would post a new thread on this for easy search and for anyone looking to see if some one has done this type of mod before.

I previously had put on a G37IPL muffler on my FX50 and while it increased the volume a bit and had a deeper tone I thought I could still go a little louder.

Since I had my OEM FX50 muffler just sitting there I thought I would cut it open and remove some of the baffeling to make it louder. (this type of mod was done with much success on a previous Maserati Forum I was on).

Below are the pics of the muffler cut open and then a close of up how it looked after I removed the restrictive piping inside.

After having it installed I would say the result is great. It has a much richer sound than stock, you can now hear the V8 rumble but it is not too loud and has no drone. inside the car it just loud enough to hear but not to loud to get annoying or give you a headache. I am happy with the result and the sound is pretty close to what I was looking for.

Yeah got a bit louder after a few days. Still no drone, not to intrusive in the cabin.. Really liking the modification. No regrets.

did you tig weld the panels back on? rust and vibration will be a problem for them after a while..

Mutilated mine for a 2012 fx35. I couldn't bring myself to buy the sport muffler and heard drone complaints with tanabe.

It's louder (can't tell in the car with Windows up).

No drone. For the money I'm happy with it and from an environmental point I didn't create an in used muffler.

Muffler shop was able to mig weld it back really easy then paint over it. What you can't see from the photos is the piece that was cut out.
