GTR wheels in the winter?

Hey guys,

as some of you know I recently bought a set of dark gunmetal GTR rims. I just ordered tires and am hoping to have them on before the end of the week. However, I do have a question. Would running these wheels in the winter ruin them? I know I run my OEM 20s in the winter and they look just fine as well as the chrome 20s on my cadillac escalade and they look great as well but ive never had experience with painted wheels before such as these. I can swap out my wheels to the OEMS in the winter, I would just rather look cool all year long :glasses-cool:

Hoping to hear your advice and or any pictures if anyone has ran them during the winter months.

Thanks guys!

Well, I have not owned them. Ill give you my opinion though. I think, considering that painted wheels are easier to wash and maintain than say chrome or aluminum, and the way my painted wheels look after 9 years of abuse. I would say that you are fine. I would however though, coat them with a sealant such as Klasse twice a winter to help keep the winter salt and chemicals off of them. As long as you take care of them during the winter with regular washes also, I do not think that you will have any problems.

Personally I would run them in the summer since you have a set of the OEM 20's that you can run with winter tires on.

I would run them in the summer and use the stock 20's for the winter.

I agree with running them during summer only. Short term you won't see major damage if you use them during winter, but frequent exposure to salt will eventually cause damage. Too nice of a wheel to see snow, plus its easier to sell them in the future if they are in great condition.

they'll hold up fine but since theyre painted you may get chipping from road debris. Also The width of them makes them horrible for winter conditions. I would stick to your 20's for the winter.

Yeah I would be worried about the width for snow tires.

You kinda want skinnier wheels for winter rims.

Go with the OEM's for winter and GTR's for summer.

I wouldve thought wider tires was better in the snow (more traction and surface area) but i guess not. *sadface*

Wide tires are bad for snow and rain. More likely to lose traction in snow and hydroplane in the rain. Plus if you're putting high performance summer tires on there, it'll suck in snow.

Just do the switch up every summer. Oem's for winter and GT R's for summer you can't go wrong.

I ran mine year round. No noticeable wear. Bit again it was only over 2k+ miles and the worst "winter" conditions they've seen was a dusting of snow. At least I think it was snow......

I'm not going to lie, I considered getting GTRs for winter too. I think the painted wheels would be durable enough during winter. I don't care about the width of the tire or traction, I want to look good during the winter too. :rotfl:

Plasti-dip them for the winter if you really want to run them in the winter.
They are actually really good at protecting against any chips or salt
and then in the summer just peel them off

I'm sure using some form of sealant would help the rims riding in the winter
but plasti-dip is essentially removable rubberized paint, comes for about 7 bucks a can at Home Depot (only need 5 Cans for 4 wheels), put on 5-6 coats on the wheels and drive your heart away. I used them on my 18 stockers all winter, only downside Ive begin to notice now is they are starting to dull in color (which I think is because of salt buildup from MA roads) which is okay because I plan on redoing them this summer anyways

I think the only thing really to worry about using the GTR wheels for winter is the possibility of damaging an expensive wheel

so much hate in running GTR rims in the winter :disapointed:. I wanted to do this as well, as it would look nice against the white snow.... I live in Alberta, Canada so we get a ton of snow. Anybody here with that put on GTR rims for winter in a place that has a lot of snow?
