Groaning While Braking

On occasion while braking there is a loud groan that can be heard that seems to originate low in the car by the firewall. It is intermitent and only happens when braking (normally around 45-55 mph). The groan is loud and will continue until brake pressure is released.

Visual brake inspection looks good. Is there something in the ABS that might cause this?

I had the same brake groaning when I first got my FX and it was due to glazed brake pads. I just roughed them up with a wire wheel and groaning gone.

Sandpaper works well too for smoothing brake pads.

You can also perform what's known as a brake pad burnishing procedure. Essentially you accelerate up to 60mph and firmly press the brake pedal to get down to about 10mph. You need to repeat this about 10 times in succession to get your pads and rotors nice and hot. This should deposit a thin layer of pad material on the rotor - appropriately. Drive around for a while to let your brakes cool - you don't want to use your brakes again after you complete your ten cycles until temperatures have come down (10-15 minutes of driving).
