Grinding brakes ?

I've been having problems with my brakes ever since I bought the FX few years ago. When ever I brake the car seems to always shake and vibrate. I did a brake inspection twice at the dealership and they told me it looks okay. However, I replaced the front rotors and pads about a year and a half ago but the problem is still there.

Now I'm having a more serious problem, where there is some kind go grinding noise I think coming from the brakes even without braking. I'd be just cursing regularly and I could here this grinding noise.

Am I the only one with this problem? I will be taking the car back and have them check/replace the brakes.

happened to me before, your calipers at most likely seized up, had a shop change my breaks for me awhile back all was good until I heard the same sound you are describing. Found out a few months later that the breaks were poorly put together so they seized up (looks like they banged the pin in) what another shop said to me. I had to buy new rotors and a new caliper for the back driver side wheel, what scares me now is my front two are starting to show the same symptoms :|

might be your wheel bearing, the heat shield behind the rotors might be bent, rusted pad onto rotor, seized brake piston.
Also it might be from your rack and pinion the shake and vibration. Have you adjusted the rack bolt?

Honestly, I'm not very mechanically inclined as I wish to be. So I would say no. Is it an easy adjustment fix?

I just did about 18 miles on the freeway where in the beginning I could hear the grinding brake sound. However, later the sound disappeared but the car still shakes when ever coming to complete stop. This is just weird lol.

if the sound dissapeared might be that heat shield, try to bent it back a little. You can try to tighten the rack bolt if you search steering shake fixed on the search bar you will find the thread. Its not hard what so ever you just need a 1/2 ratchet and 22mm socket

This is one of those topics that is actually really well documented here on the Scene. It has been a few months since the topics were popular but with search I'm sure you can find them.

Totally common for a wheel shake on the first generation FX. Rotors and brake pads would be the first place you look, but when you describe grinding without braking - that's undoubtedly the wheel bearing. This is also common - one or two wheel bearings may go out around the 100,000 mile mark, plus or minus 20K miles.

With an AWD FX45, you have to make sure you get the correct front and rear wheel bearings but each one should be around $100. There is a DIY for replacing wheel bearings.

The source of the shaking could be a combination of your rotors and the power steering. This is also documented here - how to adjust the power steering by turning one bolt less than 1/4 turn. Most of the steering wheel shakers are fixed with the power steering adjustment.

Don't be surprised if you actually have two of the root causes. You might solve one cause and still have the problem.

For some reason the noises went away. I no longer hear any noise coming from the brakes when the car is moving which is really weird. However the grinding noises are still there when braking and shudders heavily at high speeds.

I will be going to a mechanic soon and update this thread.

I also forgot to mention that the front right tire has a tread of 3/32 while the rest are 4/32. Is this what's causing the shuddering when braking at high speeds? While the brake lining on the rear brakes are 4mm while the fronts are 7mm.

Thanks again

Does anyone have pics of how to change the rear brakes on a 2004 FX35...I just noticed the other day when repairing a flat that the brake pads are starting to look thin and I want to be proactive and repair them myself...What I noticed from only a visual observation is that the rear brakes are setup alittle different...Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance

Larry
