I had a great opportunity to meet the legend Chief of Design Shiro Nakamura at Pebble Beach Concourse D'Elegance a few weeks ago. Very cool guy who took the time to answer questions from a fan of his work. From one designer to another, I really appreciated that conversation. He even took time out to take this photo with me in front of a QX70
That was pretty much it. My day job I'm an Interior Designer, but I secretly want to get into car interiors. Specifically luxury car interiors. More specifically, Infiniti interiors. I asked him about what the thought process was behind the design of the FX and he told me that it was driven by a "sporty" desire as opposed to a more luxurious larger feel. That's why the interior has a closer feel to the driver as compared to the M. He said that the new version of the FX/ QX70 will have a more aggressive looking design, as he motioned to the sharper lines of the Q50 positioned right behind us.
He gets his inspiration from nature and elements of Japanese culture. I tried to see if I could work up a possible tour of the design studio, but that wasn't too successful. Though, he mentioned that every four years or so, Nissan/ Infiniti holds an open house in Japan. I'm gonna try see if I can learn more info on that. All in all, he is a really cool guy and answered every question I had gladly. I only wish I could think of more questions to keep the conversation going a little longer. I'm open to any suggestions for questions you guys might have, just in case I run into Mr. Nakamura or anyone from the Infiniti design team again. I try to make it the big shows each year.
