G37 / FX50 Akebono Brake Retrofit

how hard is it to change the rear knuckle? I am contemplating either selling the rear set I have or biting the bullet and getting the rears done (buying the remaining parts). I already have the ball joint adapter from TC, but I reread this thread and he mentioned replacing the ball joint nut also, it that still necessary? thanks

no, the ball joint nut is not really necissary, ideally in the beginning I did think it would be better,I have since ordered 09 nuts to compare & really the flange isn't bigger on the new design anyway, & after already installing a few with the original nuts they are fine really, was just me being overly anal, there fine with the stock nut...

thanks John.

I havent looked back there, but can I get the knuckles off and installed with hand tools? how long did it take you to do the swap?

I am currently sanding all the calipers since brake fluid leaked and started to strip the clear coat

they can be done but there a pain in the ass, getting the 4 bolts for the axle hub is a pain, you need to lossen the center axle bolt & slide the axle in a bit to have a little more room to get the 4 bolts off & getting the BJ nut loose can also sometimes be a pain... tight space back there, but it is doable really as long as you have the tools. you'll need a very large socket for the axle nut(forgot what size) but really hand tools should be all that's really needed. an air gun for the axle nut helps but shouldn't be absolutely necissary, & on my fx the upper BJ was so tight that it started to round off a bit trying to lossen it, there an air chisel can come in handy but again, shouldn't be absolutely necissary either... time wise I'd say a good 2-3 hours a side for a first time I guess, biggest single problem I think is if the BJ nut happens to be really tight & hard to break loose... it will have to be lossened with the axle still in place so it's a bit tight space wise...

Some update from Joe @ Infinitipartsusa, while I am still waiting my rear LH knuckle (RH side is stocked) to be stocked to ship. Here is the email from Joe. I am waiting for his confirmation on needing the lateral link for the RH side or not and the shape of dimension of the LH knuckle with new part numbers. Once all the information is confirmed and available, the pdf can be updated. And I will try to get a DIY for the rear knuckle installation when I install the rear section of this retro-fit.

It looks like Nissan has adapted a new part number to replace the original housing needed to make this conversion (see below). For all I can guess, Nissan noticed the surge in ordering and possibly made an update to the part due to people retro-fitting these on the older S50. It seems that we now have to include a lateral link in the replacement of these housings.

Part Number
Description Cost 43019-1CA0B HOUSING REAR AXLE LH (UPDATED) $304.20 55110-1CA0A ROD COMPL RADIUS $62.53

No problem man. I can't guarantee the quality and the details of the write up. But I will do my best. I think it will still take couple weeks for me to get the BBK installed. Still waiting for news from Joe on the availability of the knuckle.

I received my rotors from Rotorpros (thank you Rich for a smooth transaction) and they are nice. I never realized how heavy they are, but they are massive also, I measured [ST]14.5[/ST] 14 inches. I got the Posi-Quiet pads since I have them in the rear now and have no complaints, we'll see about the fronts.

As for the calipers, I painted them with G2 but I must of not waited long enough for the paint to mix, it left the surface a little bumpy. I tried sand it down and use the Duplicolor caliper paint (since G2 had to be ordered), no comparison the G2 paint is so much better in color, gloss, and depth. Im going to have to wait and order another G2 so I can redo the calipers. :mad.:

They ain't light.

I am waiting for my entire caliper parts, stoptech (powerslot) rotors & hawk pads coming next week. If i got time to paint the caliper, then installation will on saturday, otherwise, it will be the week after.

finished painting mine with VHT titanium silver engine paint (rated at 600 degrees), painted the Akebono logo on with DupliColor engine gloss black then with some clear (rated at 500 degrees), painted the Akebono on with DC engine black.

I started the painting process with G2 then I wet sanded that because I wasnt happy with the texture, I went and bought Duplicolor since G2 had to be ordered, then bought VHT because DC was that bad. I really like VHT Silver engine paint, lots of metal flakes, Duplicolor Caliper silver is not really good at all.

I would rank the paints like this 1. G2 2. VHT 3. Duplicolor

(compared to stock silver) installed the speed bleeder

could wait, got them mounted. Hardest part was getting the old bolts off the brake bracket. they were torque down pretty tight.
