FX50 Performance Tire Choices

2009 FX50S and 2006 FX35
Greetings everyone,
I purchased a 2009 FX 50S two months ago and it has Blizzak winter tires on the stock 21" rims. I need to change to summer tires and can only find the Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400, the Dunlop SP Sport 01 and the Pirelli PZero in the 265 / 45 R21 size, and all three tires have pretty poor reviews on Tirerack and the web in general. I will check the forums now, but does anyone have a positive summer performance tire recommendation? Performance and handling are more important to me than tire life, but I would like a tire that will now blow apart after a mere 10,000 miles....
Thank you! John Tyler

Hi and welcome. There's a thread or two discussing the limited choices at that size, I believe most were going up to a 275 as there are more options.

There is basically one choice in stock 21" tire size - the dueler, which is a crappy tire. I am almost due for new tires myself and am considering going up in size and purchasing a set of Pirellis - forget which model, it is in one of the threads mentioned above.

The Pirelli Scorpion Verde. Great tires. Currently running them right now

Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, Nokian Z line SUV, Continental Cross Contact LX Sport. All top notch tires, lots of tire tests done over here (and germans know how to test and rate everything car related!) Need a set myself, Dunlop + Nokian come out on top in the tests (handling, grip, wet + noise). I really want the new Dunlops (love the tread pattern!) but the Nokians test just as good and are way cheaper, at least here in europe. The Pirellis aren't bad, just noisier and haver terrible wear! plus a high price.

I need tires. For the price I may just buy another set of wheels, lol. How's the wear on yours?

Tire wear is great. I believe I drove around 12k miles on them so far and still has like 90% tread left. I actually bought them on sale from tirerack because they were 3 years old, got them for around 600

I will be ready for another set of these by the end of the summer, currently around 35,000 miles on them now. They have worn great for a performance tire but have gotten pretty noisy towards the end here. I guess you really say that about any tire at this stage though. I will check out some other available ones but will most likely buy another set of these.

That's good to hear the tire wear is still great around that mileage. I believe any set of tires will be better than the crappy bridgestone duelers

Just remember you don't have to stick with 265's.... you can go all the way to 295/40 with no issues. Lot's of choices in those ranges out there.
