I need to replace the manifold cats on an FX45. There is little hand space between the inner fender and the engine. Must the engine be removed or can the manifolds be R&R'd in place?
I have replaced my left manifold without taking out the engine. But is a major PIA. I have buy a set of "Semi-Deep" height socket to remove a couple nut due to the short socket is too short to grip the nut due the stud are a bit too long. The deep socket was too long to get into the gab between the inner fender and the engine.
Thanks very much for the response. I'm a very experienced mech but new to the FX, so I appreciate the info. It was a '45 on which you replaced the manifold, correct?
Yep, it was my 2003 FX45 which I no longer own. I did the replacement back in October 2016. Took a bunch of pictures of the process. Just looked at them again, but can't make much sense out of them anymore . Good luck with it!
Thanks, again. I'm inspired to take on the replacement ASAP. Millercat out of Northern Cal make CARB cats at a reasonable price (cheaper than my 911!). I'll go with them unless you can recommend another supplier.
I'll follow your lead and go OEM. Aftermarket cats do not have provisions for heat shield attachment. That creates an additional expense (and headache) for a simple R&R procedure. Any more advice on procedure? Car on jack stands? Remove front wheel? Thanks!
I also have to disconnect the lower steering half shaft from the rack-n-pinion and the secondary cat as well.
A couple studs came out with the nuts while trying to loosen the nuts.
