IMO, the 35's exhaust note is a little more pronounced. Whenever I see one from the front and it's got stock 20's, I don't even need to wait for it to go by to know that it's a 35 (and not 45). I can just tell by the exhaust note. It's sounds just like the Z's and G's.

. If you plan on modding or not feel being satisfied with the power. The go get a 45. If not, 35 will be a better choice. Make sure you have enough in your bank account. Once you started modding, you will nvr stop. :wink (2):

2007 FX35 AWD (what you have):
3.5 L v6
275 HP at 6,200 RPM
268 ft-lbs torque at 4,800 RPM
Curb Weight: 4314 lbs.
2007 FX45 AWD
4.5 L v8
320 HP at 6,000 RPM
335 HP at 4,000 RPM
Curb Weight: 4488 lbs.
You think a CAI, lightweight pulley, intake spacer and headers can achieve the FX45 numbers? Even with the weight advantage, unless you stroke the engine or FI, I don't see it happeneing. How much HP and torque do you think you can gain from simple bolt-on's?
I'm going to piggy back on this thread... I'm shopping for an FX and, like the OP, I'm weighing the 35 vs 45. Is there a difference in maintenance costs/expense? the VQ35 engine is far more common (G's, Z's, Altimas, Maximas) and I imagine them cheaper and easier to maintain. I'm considering an older ('03-'04) 60-70k mileage FX45 or a newer ('06) 40-50k miles FX35 to keep everything within the budget. Thoughts?

I have a Pearl White 05 FX35, 54000 miles for sale if you are interested.
not much of difference in cost of ownership except for the extra oil you'll put in a 45. like i have mentioned before, an AWD FX35 will give you plenty of satisfaction. VQ engine is one the best ones and will tempt you a lot to play with it.

Gotta agree with Chedman on this one. I'm in a 1st gen VQ35DE and I had every bolt on within reason along with an ECU tune. Two different dynos put me at 236whp. I don't think I could have pulled on a VK.
Today it's a different story. :wink (2):
The VQ engine won all kinds of awards and has been around long enough for shops to know the most common problems and solutions. It's actually in quite a few cars:

+1 on this too. If you are worried about the difference in maintenance costs, then I would imagine you'd also worry about fuel? Go with the 35. Plenty of pep - so much fun to drive and still have some utility when you need it. 45 - you get what you pay for unless you plan to modify the car as so many of us have here on IS.

I drive a 2003 FX-45 and everybody tells me it is the weirdest sounding V-8 they ever heard. I love it, but they say it sounds like a tin can full of angry hornets! Anyway, I love the thing and hope it lasts forever.
