Funky smell from vents

I noticed my vents have this funky odor coming from them when I first turn them on. I changed the micro cabin filter and it still smells. And the dealer told me it's normal.


Anyways I upgraded the Microcabin filter to the FX50's grape polyphenol carbon filter.
 
Its due to the condensation that develops in the vents after a/c use. This will regularly happen if you turn off the car while the a/c is running or immediately following the use of the a/c without properly letting the drying out the vents.
 
Yep filter change will fix it. Had the same issue. Changed my filter to the charcoal filter and no more smell.
 
do the lysol spray and clean the vents and shit. turn the a/c on high... and recirculate... spray lysol underneath your passenger side and let some of it recirculate. it will help a little bit
 
If you change the cabin filter make sure to get the carbon activated one cause the plain paper one won't help with the smell.
 
I always turn my A/C off a few blocks (or minutes) before arriving at my destination so the blower can both warm up the evaporater and reduce the condensate that would be left after shutting the car off. If the evaporater is still ice cold when you stop it will continue to condense humidity out of the ambient air which just increases the likelyhood of mold or mildew forming. By doing this I have never had a smelly HVAC air problem in any of my many cars.
 
+1. I do the exact same thing as gofast. I usually turn off the A/C and let it run naturally for about two minutes or so prior to my destination just for those reasons. I think it really helps.
 
Yep, I turn off the AC a few minutes before arriving at my destination too just for that reason.

I've never had a smelly issue...I'm at almost 60k miles and never turn off climate control or A/C.

However, I have changed the cabin filter twice already. I change it what the interval recommends, not when I see it's dirty. I think that makes a big difference. I can still smell the new car smell at 60k miles.
