Fluid Change Service

if cerritos charges $50 then its worth is just for the sake of convenience. my problem is i don't trust most mechanics to do as good of a job as myself, they'll take the ez route just for the sake of time, maybe i'm just being too anal but theres been many times where i've done oil changes for family members and i find stripped bolts/threads from overuse of impact wrenches ect.

thats an awesome vid and i'll probably be doing this soon, which diff. fluid did you use?

That's exactly what I thought too, $50 is not that bad for this service but that was before I found that video. Right after watching that video, I knew this was going to be easy and cheap. Under $30 for parts, 15 minutes labor, you save more time then going to the dealership!

I used Valvoline 75W90 full synthetic gear oil at $7.99 a quart......you end up using only 1.2 ~ 1.3 quarts so just buy 2. In the same section you'll find the pennzoil fluid pump for $6.99 (for quart size bottles) so make sure to pick that up too.

and I will be the first to use another brand , now if they want to give their fluid to me for free....that's another story

Yeah do this! the oil looks nasty for 67K miles, u'll be surprised at how much the bolt is covered with metal shavings!

Also remember to use a looong breaker bar, don't want to end up smashing you finger like I did.....

75W90 Fully synthetic!

This is great info. I will try this as soon as I drive the car regularly again and I will go with another brand.

how many miles do you have now? manual said to change at 30K but that sounds kind of early. 60K should be good, then prolly change again after 80K miles since full synthetic oil is in there :shy:

Well then, I guess I'm a bit overdue...

BTW, what are the metal particles? Where is that coming from? (Excuse my ignorance)

Yeah, he ended up going to South Bay NISSAN.......f'ing assholes there, no joke......

Anyway, I just performed this service myself on Friday and this took exactly 30 minutes. I did this with 67K miles on my car and the old fluid smelled BAD and looked very dirty, looked like it was mixed with a lot of metal shavings since the bottom magnetic drain bolt was COVERED with metal shavings.

This video is SPOT ON with the directions.

(No need to lift car up, just crawl under, still plenty of space!)

Materials:
10mm hex nut $2.49
breaker bar
pan to collect fluid (Smells BAD)
75W90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil ($7.99 a quart) manual says 80W90 but 75W90 should be fine
Pennzoil fluid pump $6.99 (made for quart size bottles)

use the 10mm hex nut to open up the 2 bolts, one on the top right side and one on the bottom facing out towards the muffler, very easy to get to (make sure you use a decent long breaker bar, I used a short one and ended up smashing my finger because the bolt cracks open right away and my hand flew up against the suspension bar, all black under my nail now)

The bottom bolt is the drain bolt so place the pan directly under. Let it drain completely until it stops dripping, hand tighten this bottom bolt.

Start pumping the gear oil into the top right side. pump 1.4 liters ~ (1.3 quarts) into the gearbox or until it starts dripping.

I pumped ~ 1.2 quarts because it started dripping alot and couldn't pump much more into there, so it's probably mixed with .1 quarts of old fluid.

Tighten both bolts tightly! That's it!

In other words, just follow the video exactly step by step.

Total price in parts was $29.xx which includes the 10mm hex nut at $2.49.

Save yourself the money and do it yourself! This is just as easy as doing an oil change, the only hard part was pumping the oil into the gearbox. It took a lot of pumps but it's a good workout with that wrist action.

PM me for his contact info.

just did this over the weekend, funning thing was i pumped in abouit 1.6 qts. at around 1.5 qts i thought something was wrong since i expected oil to start spilling around 1.2-1.3ish, but sure enought around 1.6 oil started spilling out of the top hole. i also notice SLUDGE caked the threads of the bottom drain bolt! since this is such an ez DIY maintenance procedure i'll prolly do it every 15k, should only cost me 2 qts of synthetic now that i have all the tools.

It was easy right? No need to even lift the car......i don't know how you pumped in 1.6 quarts! How many miles do you have?

That sludge is all those metal shavings since that bottom drain plug is a strong magnet.....pretty nasty right??

when i did mine, i did see the sludge on the bolt but my oil didn't look very bad, slightly darker than the fresh one. at least now i can keep track of my maintenance routines.
and i didn't use a pump but a 5 mm black rubber hose that i attached to the bottle n squeezed with the other end of the hose inside the pumpkin.
I used mobil ! 75W90 gear oil.

i've got about 62k. i also let it drain about 1-2hrs , enough time so theres no more oil dripping out...also i did not notice any metal shavings on my bolt at all...just dark sludge. another weird thing, when i took out the top bolt, amber oil was dripping out so i figured 'hey its not even dirty in there.' but removing the bottom drain bolt and the dark stuff really started to drain out.

OK, I just got done doing this. Man, this is ez. Took me whopping 15 minutes and i managed to do this without lifting up the car (I am lowered on H&R). It was a tight fit for my big ass, but I managed. The hardest part was pumping the stuff. I managed to pump about 1.6 quarter of this stuff in. I saw the crap on the drainage bolt, but the actual fluid didn't look too shabby. The crap on the drainage bolt look very similar to the transmission drainage bolt on my accord. Bunch of crap gunked on it. Thanks for the DIY!

even easier than a regular oil change right? i drove up on ramps so i'd have room to use a breaker bar, i might be able to just pour oil in from the bottle w/out need of a pump next time, the gear oil bottles come w/ a pointed spout.

now i just gotta figure out which way to changed the transmission, no flush thats for sure but should i just drain the pain or do that whole gravity feed while the engine is running...

First I did a flush filled them up with mobil1 drove my fX for a few days and then I drained it and used fully synthetic RP fluids to refill it.

Tada easy day..

how exactly did you flush it, just pour oil in while its draining?

I bought a extra quart so I can pour it while it's open.. But I guess it wasn't really a flush.. I just waited 5 days to change the fluid again.. So now I'm certain that everything in there is clean.

how'd the oil look after 5 days?

It looked good a bit dirty not much tho... What did surprices me was the metal particles on the bolt plug.. It was full again not as much as the first time but it had lots of metal particles attached to it..

I did the same with the engine oil.. Changed ran for like 5 day and drained.. Couldn't understand why the oil got so dark in such a short period of time..
