Ive been doing a lot of research online about an exhaust for my 09 FX35. Turns out the G37 Coupe is very similar so I thought, if I can find a used one for cheap to experiment on I will go ahead and try it out. So I found an exhaust (TopSpeed I believe) Axle-Back exhaust on Craigslist and decided to pick it up.
At first it looked like it would bolt right up so I removed the 4 bolts holding the stock exhaust and took it off the hangers. No problem. The passenger side muffler basically bolted right into place, slightly tugging back on the hanger, but its stretchy and not serious enough to think twice. The driver side can has 2 hangers which cann both be put on but dont let the pipe line up. I realized that I dont need both since the aftermarket muffler is MUCH lighter and smaller so I took out the dremel and cut the welds holding the 2nd hanger onto the pipe. After that, same as the other side it fell right into place with a little extra tension on the rubber hanger.
As I got out from under the FX I realized that I had just essentially bolted on an exhaust for my car which nobody makes an exhaust for. The excitement ran out a little as I noticed the tips sit about 4-5" back from the stock location. I set this aside as I started the FX for the first time and it sounded so good and deep. I drove it around for a bit (very happy with the sound; no rasp just deep and ballsy) and once assured that everything was OK underneath I set out for a solution to the tips.
I threw around the idea of just clamping on some new tips but the ones on the pipes are so big that nothing fit over them. Then I took a ride to a friends muffler shop who proceeded to take a hacksaw to my "new" used exhaust and hack the tip off, weld on an extension and back on with the great looking stock tips......and thats it.
So many members looking for an exhaust that doesnt yet exist (nvidia will soon, but still not yet) and the solution is simple as the wide variety of exhausts available from the G37 with minor modification, bold right on. I didnt look into how well this would work with a cat-back exhaust but I cant see it being that much worse. Anyway...heres pics of the process I explained above and a quick video. More to come soon.
