Continuing my series of B4 and After to return my new babe to showroom splendor...
The past couple of weekends, I've been detailing exterior areas of my vehicle often ignored by the casual owner focused more on a quick wash, and/or perhaps a shine via liquid or paste wax - all while leaving the unexposed trim dirty from dirt and grime. If ignored for years, the grime can get so built up, some owners will continue to ignore it; too difficult to clean.
This series of photos is of the rear lift-gate area of my 2015 QX70; more specifically the water/drain channels between the rubber seals and the exposed exterior. I spent time detailing the entire lift areas of metal, plastic and rubber. The below photos are some before and after shots for demonstrate.
An amateur detailer's must-have is a soft brush for detailing, preferrably one with a rubber tip at the opposite end of the brush for removing dirt and grime in tight corners, beneath the edges of the seals and any overlapping plastic parts. My choice is a soft-bristle brush from Mother's, but you can use any small detail brush that has soft bristles that won't scratch metal, plastic or the vehicles clear-coat seal. The brush can be used to work the grime from beneath areas typically not reached by simply wiping with a soapy/wet cloth. I use the angled rubber tip to dig grim out from beneath rubber seals, around the edges of plastic, and in tight areas where you're fingers can't go. One of my favorites is to use the soft bristles to detail around the exterior INFINITI logos, decals and plastic trim. First step is to use a shopvac to vacuum the drain channels to remove as much dirt and debris as possible; then use a liquid detergent with the detail brush to thoroughly clean the channels; wipe clean/dry, then renew/protect plastic, rubber and leather trim with your favorite protectant.
(Products used: Water, Dawn Liquid, Mother's Detail Brush, Mother's VLR (Vinyl, Leather, Rubber Care) spray).
My QX70 is now 3-years old, but look brand new by paying attention to these simple details.
Enjoy!
