Engine idle

whenever i start my fx50 it idles at 1500rpm. it takes it about 20seconds for it to go to 1000rpm, and finally settles at 800rpm.

is this normal? bare in mind that my car has only done 660kms (400miles), and the weather out here is not cold at all.

That is normal, even if the weather is not cold outside the car is still starting from a cold start. Engine operating temps and outside temps are on way different levels.

Almost every car I've driven that's 2002+ does this... the FX revs a little higher than my Kia, but my Kia does the same.

Completely normal!

Welcome to :iS: all things FX:tup::tup:

Yup normal my 35 does the same thing thats how I know when it's warmed up and ready to go.

hmm i only owned 4 cylinder cars til now and dont recall them idling at such a high rpm during a cold start. so i am supposed to wait 30seconds after i start the car before i can drive it? what an inconvenience!

No one said you need to wait . . just start her & go, but take it easy if it's stone cold

No it's not normal. Matter of fact you should be worried. I'll tell you what.. I'll trade you my FX35 for your busted FX50 because that's how nice of a guys I am.

thats the best my FX sounds, for the first 5 minutes. then it slows down and i get in and can't hear anything... anybody ever hole shotted it with the rear hatch open like i have? sounds awesome. BB

you gonna pay for shipping it from dubai to Dallas:P

besides ours dont have all the toys that you all get in the states, which really sucks

Very normal.. I alway let my baby warm up till it goes down to one rpm or lower... You know her morning streach!

it's emissions related

it idles fast on startup to warm the cats up, otherwise the emissions will not meet standard. they made mazda recall the miatas to change the start profile to do the same thing.

right

it's also one of the reasons i highly recommend a 0w oil nowadays. the engine control computer is programmed to meet EPA regs, not be nice to the engine. with the high rpm starts, you want oil up in the bearings as quick as possible. on a cool day, 0w will have the bearings pressurized while 10w still has the oil pump in bypass...

Yup normal until the car heats up and the idle drops. Interesting statement about the 0w oil. I would personally only use the 0w in winter/cold weather.
