Emulsion under oil cap

Hello,

I was changing the oil on Saturday and noticed emulsion forming on the underside of the oil cap. Is this normal for these engines, or am I looking at a deteriorating head gasket?

Thanks

I heard that also happens of you have a habit of taking short trips or not letting the engine reach full operating temps (driving 15-20 minutes)

The oil looked fine, but it left his engine only has 11a few bubbles in the pan and it seems they had a red tinge to them, however when I took the rad cap off there was nothing but clean fluid. I drive 30 minutes on the highway to work and back. Luckily I'm able to cruise at 75mph for most of the trip. This engine only has 139,000 km (86,000 miles).

I say you just found some condensation. After a longer drive (45 minutes) check under the cap again?

It's possible you have a small head gasket leak or your valve seals are getting a little tired. Doubt there is anything you need to worry about - just standard maintenance to make sure contaminated oil isn't working inside your motor for too long.

If you want to know for sure, check out Blackstone labs. For about $30, you can send them a sample of your used oil and they will do an analysis to tell you exactly what is in there.

I need to do that Blackstone labs test. Only thing is I didn't order the kit or do an oil change when I was home for break, and I don't trust the dealer to get a sample.

I'm starting to wonder if there wasn't dex-cool in my coolant but rather something contaminated it.

I had a chat with a friend, and am told that due to our winter climate here in Calgary, that sometimes condensation in the oil will show up as emulsion as Jumbosrule mentioned above . I park in a heated garage at home and work. But the drive can be -25 degrees one day and +5 two days later when a Chinook blows through. The rad fluid is pristine and has not dropped at all. Maybe I don't a head gasket problem??

Historically, the head gasket issues have always manifested as a series of "random" overheating incidents.

Oil change time again, and no sign of emulsion, which is good...but I don't understand why it would show up in the previous change and then disappear? Should have Blackstone results in the next day or three.

Any ideas?
