Dual Filament DTRL

This might be a weird question, but does anyone know why the DTRL uses a dual filament bulb? I thought the DTRL is either one or off, so why does it need a dual filament bulb?

It uses the brighter filament when on for the DRL and it dims when the headlamps are on but stays luminated.

I was also confused when I searched the model number of our bulb. I thought the U.S. version FX didn't actually have DTRL though? Mine doesn't so I'm still confused or maybe my DTRL circuit fuse is blown... :confused.:
