Driver's side mirror whistles

Hello folks- occasionally my driver's side mirror will whistle. Usually this is at Highway speeds, (55+ mph), but sometimes it can be heard faintly around 40-45 mph.

I confirmed its the mirror because I folded them while going 60 mph, and it went away. Came back as soon as I returned them to their normal position. This morning it seemed the most obnoxious (loudest) of any of the occurrences thus far. Is there any rhyme or reason as to when it whistles? I'd wager it only happens 1 out of every 5 drives, and mostly only seems to happen when I'm heading South West. Almost like it only appears when the wind is coming from a particular direction.

Needless to say, its quite obnoxious on a car this expensive.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Alright... so I searched for different key words and found this thread. Any idea what piece folks are referring to when they say "mirror caps"? Are they talking about the housing? The small piece on the bottom with the puddle light? I'll check the mirrors out tonight when I go home, but I don't think anything is loose as I've looked at them closely when cleaning them.

Thx Pinstripe. I checked them out when I got home. Seem snug and tight to me.

Then I drove 30 miles north east. No whistle. Drive 30 miles south west home. Whistles the whole way.

Yeah... It's an issue with how the caps fit... More of a problem with 2nd Gen than 1st Gen... You could try to get them replaced by the dealer as this should be covered under warranty... Especially when you can replicate the problem to show them...

Another option would be to wrap the mirrors so the cap and "base" have no cracks...
 
The glass on that mirror does shake a bit. I'll try popping off that lower cover and tightening up the screws.

Hi- The bottom cover can be removed by inserting an allen wrench into the little square hole, and then pulling down. I haven't had a chance to do this yet. Having said that, it whistled on Monday, but not Tues, Wed or Thursday.

However, if you're referring to the larger external casing, I don't know.
 
Had the same issue. Pop the cover off the bottom of the mirror. You will need a 90 degree driver to get on the screws because they are so close to the door. Tighten both screws as much as you can. My whistle never came back.
 
So, I finally got around to pulling off the bottom cover and tightening up the screws. That cover was a bit of a hassle to get off, but that's probably because I didn't know really where to pull down with the Allen wrench. I eventually taped off a really small flat head screwdriver and used that to help drop the back side first, and then it was easy to pull it free from the frontal clips.

The screws themselves didn't really seem loose, but I was able to tighten them up as far as I could (unfortunately I didn't have any Loctite handy, so I might have to do this again in another few years). Drove to work this morning, and it does seem that the little bit of tightening I was able to do has mostly solved the issue of the vibrating mirror glass. Not sure if it'll ultimately solve the random whistling, but we'll see in time...
 
Update... whistled like crazy this morning, but it was covered with water (morning dew). I have a feeling this will be a come-and-go type of situation. sigh.......
 
With mirrors the size of elephant ears we kinda do expect that sorta wind noise.. folding the mirrors alleviates the noise, but...
 
What is strange to me is that the passenger's side never whistles. But the Driver's side continues to, as I said, mostly when water is in/on the housing and around the glass.
