Driver's side head light problem.

Couple of months ago driver's side head light started 'winking', going off. I would turn the lights off than back on and it would go back to normal. It started happening more often so I got tired of it and bought new bulbs thinking it was the bulb because they were pretty old. Got the new bulbs and it was ok for a few days than it just went out one night on the way back home, the next morning it was ok. No problems for the whole week than it went out again, and than it came back. This morning it would only come on for a few seconds when I first turn the lights on than go off. Passenger side did it only once and it's been ok ever since. Any ideas what it may be? I thought maybe the ballast, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion before I spend the money on a new ballast since they are not exactly cheap. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's the ballast. But before buying the ballast I would check all connections first for any short. If that doesn't fix it buy a ballast. You can get ones OEM Matsushita ballasts really cheap off eBay:

I checked the connections as best as I could and it all seems ok. Thanks for the link Fire!

One more question; is the ballast inside the head light housing or just underneath it?

I know on some Infiniti's the actual ballast is on the outside attached below the headlight. The igniter end of it that attaches to the back of the bulb is behind that cap you unscrew to get to the inside of the headlight on the back when you change the bulb.

Did you check to make sure the bulb is seated properly? I had an issue where mine had actually come loose.

I can't find a pic, but the ballast is right underneath the hole the bulb goes in.

Yes I checked to make sure the bulb is seated properly, thanks Stu!

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll check that link Fire posted and get two ballasts. I might as well change both sides if I'm gonna take the front cover off any way, if one goes the other can't be too far behind I guess.

Had the same problem before, it was a bad connection. After I fully uninstalled-installed the bulb problem went away.

Lol y'all need to remove the bulbs, then place them back in firmly.
Happened to me 2 years after owning my '06. The dealer did it for me and told me that the passenger bulb wasn't fully inserted/seat correctly.

This problem happened only with the passenger light.

This problem is happening to me now. BiG Turk how did your problem with the light turned out? is it fixed yet? You don't have to pull out the lights to change the ballast right? My passenger headlight is not going on after a few months. The first few months i would have to shut the lights off and then turn it back on for it to work. Thanks for the angel eyes i'm getting it away with the cops lol. Please advise which is the best way to go thank you all..

Hey Raymond, changing the ballast without taking the light out is doable, but it's not gonna be easy for sure. Sounds like your ballast is on it's way out.
