Door Escutcheon Won't Screw In

I have a problem that I have been somehow struggling with for over a week. The metal piece under the escutcheon will not go back in on both of my rear doors. I took them off to paint the chrome pieces over top of them, and now, even though the screws didn't fall out and I didn't do anything to them, they will not screw back in. They sit flush with the rubber seal on the door, however the screw will not screw into the hole. You can see where the screw is hitting the metal piece by the outline it made. It isn't sitting in far enough. I have no clue how considering it is flush with the door. The screw holes are not stripped. Any insight you can give me would be awesome. It has been killing me looking at my car for the past week with the pieces missing. :at-wits-end:

I had the same problem before. My right rear escutcheon . Took me 2 hours to put it back. You need to lined it up perfectly. Takes time...

It's so far off. I have no clue why. I literally did nothing but take them out. It's a good 3/4 the length of the tip of the screw below the hole. I may have to take it to a shop...

I sell replacement handles and escutcheon and have written up installation instructions and replaced many of these. What i would suggest is 1 of 2 things. Sometime the t-bolt on the inside gets pushed in a tiny bit and wont bite properly. I would suggest pushing hard into the t bolt and backing it out while still applying pressure. The other thing you could check is that the handle itself isnt seeded properly into the door and it could be pushing back on the inner mechanism. It also could be your child safety locks that keep the handle from sitting all the way in.
