Door Ding Guard Removal

Not sure if I'm using the correct term here, but I have the side molding on my doors used to protect against door dings. Out of all the pictures on the website, I think I must be the only fx that ever had them.

I'd like to get rid of them, but I am not sure how severe of a mark will be left on the sides of the car. My car is a 2007, so I wouldn't think it would be hat bad. I'm assuming it would be like debadging. Has anyone removed side molding halfway up the door and if so, was it a mark that you could polish out?

i think your the only fx with it. the previous owner must of put it on. id take a heat gun. warm up the glue and try to peel it off with some fishing line. then use some goo be gone or i heard wd40 works also to remove the glue residue.

Yeah, I would go with what Andrew (Viperi) said above. I would prefer to use a 3M Eraser Wheel like in this video. I have used it to strip off the adhesive left from removing the lower door molding and this wheel works wonder and fast!

Just FYI to others who may try removing molding from an unknown owner/source:

I got the molding removed in about 5 minutes. Since having the molding off, I have used the following items trying to remove the adhesive: goo gone, 3m adhesive remover, eraser wheel, goo gone+claybar, adhesive remover+ claybar, and hot air drier and have been unsuccessful at getting all of the residue off. I have spent approximately 10 hours this weekend only working on removing the adhesive residue and still have a full door left to remove.

Further, I knew there was a risk of having faded paint around the molding location, but after removing, I have found the following problems:

1. There is scratch through the clear coat and part of the paint on the top side of where the molding was on the drivers side.
2. There are small dents at various spots on the doors on either side. It seems the molding was probably put on there to cover up the small dents. So far, there is no scratch like a typically door ding, just small dents.

Because of the 2 above reasons, I am now ordering new moldings to replace what was there since it was destroyed in the removal process.

Just a warning to others who try this, faded paint may not be the only issue and now instead of having a clean door-side, I am $125 in the hole because I have to buy new moldings to re-do what I just un-did which took the entire weekend to do...

The dents aren't particularly bad, so I had thought about it. There is still a long, non-removable, straight scratch all the way down the drivers side, so I'm just going to get new molding and re-install, at least I think new molding would be better than touch-up paint all the way down the side.
