Disc ITALIA Rotors and HyperCeramic Pads

Want to share your experience with these?

This is my setup (purchased and installed December last year):

1. Disc Italia drilled and slotted rotors (I painted the exposed outer part of rotors in black hi-temp paint)

2. Disc Italia HyperCeramic Pads - it was a great fit. Headache-free install.

Impressions:

  • definitely VERY clean and solid setup. No brake dust at all. Only visible if you run your finger on the rim clearcoat after a wash and a few days of driving.
  • no rotor fade so far
  • pads aren't as grabby as OEM pads. I have to break earlier to stop in time. Is this attributed to pads being 100% ceramic? Stopping distance sightly improves as rotors heat up
  • whirring sound. Slotted rotors? I read it's normal to make this sound for slotted modules

Is this true anyone? Since I installed my rotors, I've been hearing a sound coming from the outside of the FX but I cant seem to figure out what it is.
 
Dimpled rotors will make an airy sound as the dimples pass the pads, I have first hand experience with this. Drilled rotors will make less noise or maybe even none (which is what I have now). Not sure on slotted.

You really can hear the noise while passing a wall or guardrail.

I guess that explains the sound, I have slotted and dimpled.
 
I know that I could hear my rotoras stopping, not really in a bad way but kinda almost like a turbine whine, you could realy hear them stopping & they stopped awesome, but I did get them used & the pads were maybe half worn, not sure if they make this noise when new...
 
I rotated tires about a month ago. Took the wheels off and checked the pads while I was there - the Disc Italias pads look fantastic and generally hold up suprisingly well. There is normal rust on the back of the rotor.

I did refresh the brake grease coating between the shims.

No they have not. The performance is always rock solid and predictable though: stopping power increases as rotors and pads heat up. No rotor fade so far. It's a bit different from what we are used to with OEM setup...

I think ceramic pads can be dangerous if you need to suddenly stop. and the rusty rotors, some have a better coating (zinc).

I do have to stop a bit earlier with these pads, but it's no problem especially after the system heats up enough. There is less bite than with metallic compound pads but the braking power is uniform and constant.

My 07 G35, for instance has ridiculously grabby brakes - I have 24K on the car and I already need to resurface the rotors.

The rust is just a thing layer on the inside of the rotors - these are only a year old. I do live in a snow belt area with tons of salt and sand in the winter months, so things rust quickly. I have used aftermarket Brembos on other cars before and they rust much quicker than these.
 
I had Disc Italia rotors on my Stealth a few years ago. They performed great, but since the Stealth is a show car, I couldn't accept the rusting. I got some R-1 racing zinc coated rotors on there now and they look like brand new after 2 years and perform just as well. (I also autocross the car once and a while)
