Hi just changed the rear axle fluid on a 05 fw 35 rwd using mobile 1 75\90 LS fluid. got 2 qts of it ( have about 5oz left over) and just wanna make sure they way i did it was fine. I used my boats pump but swapped out the hose and this one actually fit almost to tight. when i seen it seeping from the opening with the tube in there i pulled it out and let it get to around the level of the bottom of the fill hole. it was still at a slow drip and i plugged it. that should be good right ?

I see your FX is an 04 if the diff oil has not ever been changed it would be a good idea to change the front and rear oil..

Differential gear oil
Front 1-3/8 pt (US Measure) 0.65 liter
API GL-5, Viscosity SAE 80 W-90 *3

Rear 3 pt (US Measure) 1.40 liter

Drain and fill to upper plug level very easy to do.

It doens't tell me a milage to change the oil, i used Valvoline GL-5 80W90 and how i remember is that it the oil can ben changed every 48 months.
Anyway the quantity is not much so why not change every 2 years and keep the diff in good condition.

I change my front and rear differential. I have alot left over too. I believe I let the fluid sit for too long and cool down.

Ok lets see if this goes anywhere. Any input would be appreciated! I had the front and rear diff fluid changed last week. Mechanic said If you fill to the top plug the front will hold a little over a quart and the rear holds almost 2. I bought 3 quarts of Mobile 1 synthetic and he used all of it even though I told him 1 in the front and 1.5 in the rear. Now Lola has a slight hessitation/ binding/ vibration feel from inital take off from a dead stop. I had this same issue when I first purchased her about 2 years ago. When I took it in to the dealer they said the REAR diff was over filled and they took some out. The hessitation was gone.
Having gone through this before I just had the tech drain about 1/2 quart out of the rear but It still feels the same, slight binding/vibration from inital take off from a dead stop. Do you think the dealer originaly said it was the rear that was over filled and it could have been the front instead or both? We all know Service advisors like giving answers even if they are inacurate. The reason this is my thought is because the awd system engages the front from 0-15mph. This is about the same area that I feel the hessitation. Should try taking some fluid out of the front diff? I have not reset the ECU. But I will try that if all else fails. I do not believe this is a computer related issue.

Anyone?

How can the differential be overfilled? Once the fluid fill up to the fill plug, they just going to flow right out. Unless they tip the car and force more then it is needed. When I change mine diff fluid, I stop filling once I see fluid start spilling out of the fill plug. Open the fill plug, if the fluid gushing out, you're over filled. Always open the fill plug before trying to open the drain plug, because you won't be going anywhere if you drained and can't fill. This has nothing to do will ECU at all.

Remember the fill plug is the higher of the two.

What type of fluid did you use?

Thanks Andy I know the fill is the top one. And it sounds stupid but I don't know what else to do. Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil 75w90 same as you. So what would you suggest?

I did read something about a differential solenoid that might be failing, ever hear of that?

Open the fill plug and check the level yourself just to be sure. Not sure what else to suggest. Maybe, just coincident that the car drive that way after diff fluid change out. Could it be a loose/leaky vacuum hose?

No have not hear of differential solenoid failing.

Just doesn't make sense both times I had the issue it had something to do with the differential fluid. Thanks for the advice, ill go back to my drawing board.
