Difference in sport and regular grill?

Easiest way to tell is to look at the Infiniti emblem. It is always the lighter chrome, so you can see the contrast between the two. There are varying shades of darkness, too. Here's a pic of my grille:

yeah that should be okay, just on a low setting because the grille is all plastic

about the "do not paint a sport grille"
that is just saying it is more of a PITA because the sport grille has a film over the chrome in order for it to be that darker color, and it makes it harder to sand everything off than if it were just a plain ol' chrome grille.

Also the sport grilles are more rare than chrome grilles and a lot of the guys would want to sport grille. You can sell or trade to help somone out that wants a sport grille instead of ruining the sport grille by painting it.

Mine oddly has the complete "sport package" but a regular chrome grill.
If you bought it used, maybe someone added the sport features, or replaced the grille at some point? Do you have the other sport stuff besides just the 20's and silver rails?

'05 started clear tails, so maybe also the darker grille started then.

With the possible exception of heated mirrors and "sport tuned suspension" (not sure about either) I have everything listed on Infinitihelp.com for the Touring and Sport packages on '04 models. I think you're right about the dark grill starting in '05.

For reference:

The V6 Touring Package includes leather-appointed seating surfaces, heated front seats, driver's memory seat and power lumbar support, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, heated outside mirrors, sunroof, 300-watt Bose audio system, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, auto on-off headlights, steering wheel audio controls, cargo floor protector, cargo net and black colored roof rails.

The Sport Package (available only on FX35 models and requires the V6 Touring Package) includes 20-inch wheels and tires, sport-tuned suspension, aluminum pedals and aluminum roof rails.

For buyers looking for the ultimate in advanced equipment, the Technology Package adds (in addition to all Premium Package features) the Infiniti Navigation System, Intelligent Cruise Control, RearView Monitor System, Tire Pressure Monitor System and Intelligent Key.

The aluminum center also has the perf pattern on the sport

That's for '05 and after. My '04 sport has the solid aluminum pieces. Just curious are the door pulls in the same pattern as the center console as well? I think I would like to change my pieces to the perf pattern just because it seems like it doesnt dent or scratch as easily.

you're right. '05 only. I guess that would somewhat make the '05 a limited edition.
It does hide small scratches
