Delvac1 ESP, not as good as i hoped....

here is the latest UOA on my 2006 FX45. while the Delvac1 ESP did a better job of controlling Iron than TDT, i find the rest of the report somewhat disappointing. the TBN is lower than the TDT at a comparable mileage, and this oil is beginning to look a bit tired.

this is the new Delvac1 ESP, and i think it shows they have some work to do on it still. there are some new limits they have to work within for the post processing on diesels. i pulled the sample with the new Blackstone vacuum pump, so the oil is still in there. i did, however, add 2 qts of Delvac to bring the level up to normal (which also is more usage than before). finally, the oil thickened out of grade (very slightly +.2)

here it is

i will be checking the oil again at 15k, which i would bet will be the end of this oil. somewhat disappointing for the price delta vs M1 TDT.

While trying to understand this, I feel like I'm trying to read what Charlie Brown's parents are saying, "Wah wa wah wa wah..." Haha. I need an acronym dictionary.

I'm like that at work -- everyone uses slang/acronyms my head spins.

There are only 4 acronyms...

Delvac 1 ESP - Not sure about this one but it doesn't matter, it's a proper noun.
M1 ----------- Mobil 1
M1 TDT ------ Another proper noun. "Turbo Diesel Truck"
TBN --------- Total Base Number

Mg is an oil additive that affects both antiwear and TBN, it is used in the HDEO oils, but not in the 0w40. basically the spike indicates when i switched to HDEO oils.

^That one is "Heavy Duty Engine Oil", meaning he's using diesel truck oil.

what can i say, i am a child of apollo..

nasa was the originator of the TLA (Three Letter Acronym). tchuck has it all right, but to expound a bit.

Delvac1 ESP is the new Delvac1, the ESP stands for Emission System Protection, meaning it is safe to use with the ceramic filters common on the newest Diesels. it meets the newest CJ-4 spec.

HDEO is indeed Heavy Duty Engine Oil. Delvac is a Mixed Fleet HDEO, meaning it is not only for Diesels, but also for automotive uses (it is API SM as well). this oil is marketed for outfits that have both class 8 trucks and cars in their fleets. one oil to use on everything.

Delvac1 has widely been considered to be the big gun when it comes to wear control (and it did a great job here). it just didn't do enough better than TDT to justify a 20% premium in price. as a side note, the TDT is very close to what the "pre ESP" Delvac1 was.
