Custom mid-pipe?

I bought the rear-section only HKS exhaust. Sounds good, but it isn't much louder than stock. The mid-pipe seems to be back ordered HKS (and I was told by HKS they won't sell it seperately anymore).

The shop that installed the rear section for me does custom work.

Would a custom mid-pipe be worth it, or do you think it'll sound terrible????

you can try to find Kakumei Y pipe. That is direct bolt on. I have found one for G37 on ebay but it seems like it will fit to FX35 but not too sure. As long as it is direct bolt on for fitting on G35x, then you should be fine. You should ask the seller.

Haha, no worries. I had to re-read my initial post to make sure I didn't say something completely out of my @ss (it was posted prior to my morning coffee).

theMerchant - Thanks for the tip. I sent the guy a PM.

Hi,

Just got back from the installer. He ended up cutting off the stock resonator and welding a piece of stainless pipe in its place. It is much better, and I'm satisfied with the exhaust note. Much louder, without being obnoxious. Thanks all for the help.

I have the full HKS. With just the rear-section, you will not hear much more sound. The mid-pipe does make it louder -- much louder that it's illegal in CA (I talked with the HKS rep).

Since you have a V6, get a high-flow resonator and mid-pipe made, can be done at any muffler shop.

If you were a V8, I would suggest no resonator and straight mid-pipe, but you might get some resonance/drone. Might be worth a try though.

You should be able to buy a NISMO 350Z/G35 mid-pipe and G35 extension off mynismo.com and I *think* it will bolt on. Don't hold me accountable, but it should be fine. You are a miss-match in piping diameter if you do this, and I personally don't mind it, but it's your choice. You'd be going from smaller to larger which is fine, but then larger to smaller.

I just checked with a local shop and talked to the owner, Hank, of Hanksville Hot Rods. He quoted me about $200 to make a new pipe with flanges to replace the stock one.

Is this a good deal?

How will it affect the sound of my otherwise stock exhaust?

1) Yes, it's a good deal if he uses stainless steel pipe and flanges. I think I paid $250 for the HKS one. Mandrel or pressure bent -- not big difference here as it's pretty much a straight pipe.

2) yes, you're removing a resonator, which I would never do on a V-6, only on an I-4, I-6 or V8, but that's just my two cents =) I'd put a high flow resonator instead. So a cheaper option or equivalent would be to cut out the resonator and put a straight pipe (if that's what you want) or to put a high flow resonator in place of the OEM one.
