Contemplating doing a custom S/C kit on the FX50

I have been thinking what could be the next step for my new FX.. I've had the SUV for about 1 year now and wanted to do something to put it over the 400WHP range. Where to begin is the question.

an exhaust intake and tune should get you over 400...... which SC are you thinking of using? There arent any kits....

Yea an exhaust, headers and Cams could boost me up about 20-30HP but I'm tryin to figure if its possible to get about 130-150 out of the stock 5.0. 1st I have to get the compress ratio and figure what limits does this engine have. Parts will be hard to come by as not to many people mod the V8s so if I would go forth I think everything will be custom fitted.

10.9:1, pretty high on the VK50.

Intake exhaust and tune will not make 400WHP, especially on AWD. Custom turbo is probably cheaper.

Lower the compression with new pistons, put on a large single turbo tune it right -- maybe $10-25k?

I think you already have a built turbo G right? I'd say go w/ what you know and turbo the FX50. Custom turbo is relatively easy, you can put it almost anywhere, just need piping and oil lines. With a custom SC, you'd have to have custom brackets built that are in perfect alignment, etc. Plus the powerband of the turbo is much better; more low end torque and you don't have to wait until redline to hit full boost.

I had a Maxima back in the day. Put a Stillen SC on it (Vortech); even though it was a kit, that thing was never in alignment and it shredded belts about as frequently as I needed to change the oil. No matter how many shims/spacers we used to align the thing, it was never right. Eventually I got tired of it and custom built a turbo set up since there weren't any kits I liked. It was surprisingly much easier than I thought it was going to be. It's just pipes, as long as you have the space to put the turbo, it's pretty simple (only took about 3 days of cutting/fitting/mockups before the setup was ready to be welded). I'd say the hardest parts for you are likely going to be fuel delivery and engine management which would have been issues w/ the SC anyways.

yea I have a fully built G and was sayin to myself is going FI on the SUV worth it.. so im prob gonna not venture into and just stick to my other plan which was going exotic.. The 50 is fast in itself for what it is.. no need to go extreme on a family vehicle even thou the thought of one would be bonkers.

maybe if i could find some cams and so some head work i can get more out of the VK50... who knows

+1.

I'd look into headers, intake, tune. What about getting spacers made? They made some pretty decent gains on the VQ, has anyone thought about them for the 45/50?

I really kinda hate they went with the 56 in the new M. The 50 just seems so much more aggressive.

Spacers are only for the VQ. It was designed with a sloped upper plenum to allow the stock strut bar in the Z to fit over it at the front. Because of this, the two front cylinders get less air. Adding the spacer effectively solves the lack of air problem.

Aside from casting issues the VK/50 manifolds have plenty of room for air flow. Grind/port polish the stock manifold and you will see some nice gains. Combine that with headers and cams I bet it would fly.....

ya but before we do these mods we need to get uprev to tune this beast. Round 1 with my turner failed. round 2 should be the end of next month we will see

i think with Cams and ported heads i should make close to 400whp.... thinking about scratchin the F/I idea on the 50.. i just picked up a 4th car..lol maybe S/C that one..

400hp at the crank yes, but not at the wheels with cams and ported heads. I would be more concerned about the fuel limitations of the injectors, fuel pump, etc with going with FI. I have not seen the specs on the FX50 for those components but I would start there especially with it being an aluminum block. If they are not up to the task, what is available out there that can?
