Coilover adjust help!

just got back home from a quick run on the angeles crest. pretty dark up there right now lol. i live right next to it tho and the car handled AMAZING. it rides way better than before and it feels stiff in a good way. the body roll in the corner is veeeery minimal and the rear end came out a bit too. really happy about the outcome! COILS ARE A MUST lol

im thinking about raising my preload /spring perch 1/4" in the rear before i get my alignment. It currently sits with 5/16" thread on the spring with like 7mm preload. adjust or see how it sits in a couple days?

The drop looks great.
Angeles Crest rocks. We were thinking of going there on Sunday, but will probably wait till it warms up a bit. We drive early & those elevations can be slick.
What tires are you running?

ok. i raised my coils on saturday. I drove all sunday and today (monday) today i hear a really bad clunking noise in the rear. Im pretty sure they are the struts but i will have to check. Ive heard on other forums it was the top nuts or i got a defact strut. here is what i did for installation. when i installed the rear struts I only took the paper gasket and installed it on the car like that. i took the top hat of the stock strut and tried to transfer it onto the bc strut but it wouldnt dit. so i installed it as is and now i got this sound. it is worse on the drivers side. any ideas? (btw it was fine before I raised the car 1/4"...)

Not sure, but the springs in rear can float in the bucket. When they're loose, they will clunk. Adjusting height a turn or two would secure it.

Love the drop. :good::good:

Nothing beats a good DIY. I hear some shops hire kids to install COs. This vid hurts my side laughing.

Check the top nuts on the shock aren't loose. Make sure your springs are still seated correctly. Raising the car should have tightened the springs in the bucket so they shouldn't be loose. Did you adjust your shocks? You may be topping out.

when i raised it i raised the sping perch 1/4" and the strut 1/4" could it be that the spring is under too much conpression?

It's not your springs are too compressed, that's almost not possible and if it was, it still wouldn't cause noise. If you set too much preload, it's no different than hitting a bump and having a spring compress which under normal circumstances shouldn't cause noise.

I'd go back and check all of the bolts/nuts you had to remove and reinstall to change the height. Check the upper shock mounts, the lower shock mounts, all of it. I'm betting something is loose as that is usually what causes clunking. If it's worse on one side, but it's happening on both, it's not a defective shock.

I reinstalled both struts right now and made sure i tightened every bolt as much i possibly can. No noises yet and I still dont know what was the issue lol. All the bolts were on pretty tight

Well, I've installed a set of used coil-overs I purchased from a former FX member and the bad luck just doesn't end. Now, I the front coils are binding and I don't know how to solve this suspension ordeal.

I am wondering if I now need to have my FX corner balanced or if anyone has any suggestions on how to adjust these darned things - I am in the Detroit area and if you guys know of a local shop that does coil-over adjustment and/or corner balancing please let me know.

Thanks
Ramiro

What do you mean by "binding" Like a restricted suspension movement? Or unequal smoothness through the shocks being compressed? This usually isnt resolved by a preload or corner balance adjustment. I'm running basically slammed about 4.5"- 5" lowered all around with 7mm preload and a basic alignment. I have dampening set on the high side because the front likes to bottom out on every driveway... But no "binding"... I'm pretty sure you have bad dampers... have it checked by a mechanic. Good Luck

Additional to that there is this hard clunk on the front right every time I go over road imperfections. I had already checked if anything is loose and no, everything is tight.

Is the clunk on top out or compression? Shock may be blown if it is topping out. Have you tried greasing the spring perch area? Corner balancing wouldn't fix binding, something is causing the spring to catch. Happened on a previous car of mine but that was a long time ago in coilover infancy. Haven't had it happen on the FX or several other cars I've had since.
