I have what I can best describe as a clanging of metal together like someone tapping two wrenches together in their hands. It is sporadic and I can only seem to hear it with the radio off, windows down, and going slowly below 20mph... but it is driving me CRAZY :bulgy-eyes:

Usually the clanks come a few at a time... so I'll be driving in the parking lot and I'll hear 3 clicks of metal pinging off each other and then it stops. Then it happens again as I go over a speed bump or something.

I've done lots of reading and it seems like it may be a rear axle issue as described here: https://www.infinitiscene.com/search/1/?q=10337-Rear-axle-click-fix . I think I do have this issue because when I go from P to D it makes a low clunk... but this sound I'm describing here is a higher pitched clink/clank of metal on metal.

Has anyone had this clanging of metal sound coming from the exterior of their ride at low speeds? I'm new to auto care and want to fix it myself but would hate to take apart the entire axle only to find it not resolve my issue.

Possibly the metal rotor shield is hitting something. I would take a look. Stick a flat head screw driver between the rotor and the back shield and bent the shield away from the rotor just a tad to see if that helps.

Forgive me if this seems dense... but my '08 FX35 has what appears to be drum brakes in the rear. In this case, would your advice still apply?

Okay as an update I've identified that the sound happens about once per wheel revolution. Driving around slowly it is slow but as I speed up the clock speeds up as well. I will look in the housing to see if there is a rock or something. Before it happened there was a sound of a rock rolling around in the wheel well for a few days.

Haha okay noted. Anyways I'll take a look and see if there is a lose body and make sure the guards aren't touching. Thanks!
