Clear Coat Peeling

I noticed that my clear coat is peeling above the rear passenger door. What would cause this?
The rest of car is fine. Would this be covered under warranty if I took it in??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Oh no, that's not good. Mike I would think it is covered under warranty.
 
did you inspect the area, edges, etc to see if that area has been painted before? If so, warranty won't cover that.

I highly doubt that is factory paint, however I think in 2010 models is when they were using a different clean coat on the FX that doesn't auto remove scratches, so it would be interested to see if anyone else reports this. However, you are the first one.
 
Almost looks like something caustic dripped on it. Keep us posted.
 
Yeah the way thats peeling looks like something acidic was poured on it because of the direction its peeling. Even so it wont be covered under warranty most likely. It doesnt look like factory clear coat failure but more like some like industrial fallout got on it since its near the roof. All I know is that infiniti is very strict with covering cosmetic defects not caused by the manufacturer.

Doesn't hurt to take it in and see if it's covered. If not, I'm sure you can buff that out.

If you even attempt to buff paint with no clear, you'll get bare metal in seconds. The whole panel needs to be repainted if the clearcoat is actually what we are seeing not there.

I thought clear coat is strong than paint. If it was acidic or something got poured that burned completely through the clearcoat, then it's going to go through the paint also. Clearcoat can withstand a ton of buffing among other weather related issues, while paint is much more sensitive.
 
A good detailer can buff a car with thin clear and seal it. Of course, best to re-spray.

Looks like it was repainted with drips and that layer came off,
or that something was spilled/sprayed on it that was too acidic.

Prob will not be under warranty as paint is wear and tear I think.
 
As everyone says, something caustic got on that spot. Or, it's been repainted and that's the spot that the shop didn't prep correctly. A factory paint job won't peel like that since it's all pretty much automated. Maybe it's just the picture, but there appears to be a residue on your molding under that spot? Maybe that's what caused the peeling.
