claybaring. how do you guys do it?

the problem I see with the autozone stuff is they give you a very tiny piece & charge a fortune for it.. I'd take like 3 of those & knead them togeather really:smile (2):

I'm not so big on clay & I'm usually more likely to just break out an orbital buffer, but I use something called clay magic at the shop when I do use it... should be able to get it from an auto paint supply store... maybe a few bucks more than the autozone stuff but probably at least 4 times the size... there are different grits too rather than just one... Andrew may know something better though

ya man those kit from autozone cost me $22 and have a tiny clay bar and a detailer.

I used the 6th one down (Heavy) but that was a nasty truck.
Most of you guys would be fine with the 7th one down I'm sure (Medium) $21.95.
The "Luber" spray is killer!!! (smell is awesome - as dumb as it sounds)

Oh - and it clearly states "non-abrasive" in the description. :)

And while your in there - add the Citrus Gloss wash. I've never seen such great car wash (have used everything under the sun - my favorite was Zymol - but can never find it).
You can try a smaller bottle for like - $8.00 - or a gallon for double that. You only need to use maybe 1 tablespoon for each wash - if that. The stuff creates tons of suds. I bought a gallon and gave a few smaller water-bottle sized samples to friends/family - they all love it.

I also like the Zaino Clay. I have also started using Ricarrdo Clay (yellow) which was recommended to me by a Detailer friend. It works extremely well.

any particular brand of clay bar that you guys would like to recommend?
up until last time i was using meguire's clay bar kit from autozone.
bought some off of ebay last time and that was very hard to knead,
it wasn't flexible at all.

I heard a company (I think clay magic) has patented clay here in the US ever since it was developed first in Japan. Many companies tried to develop their own "clay" brand but ended up getting lawsuits. So all forms of clay that's being sold here, whether from Meguirs, Mothers, Pinnacle etc. is supposed to be the same. At least that's what I heard long ago.

The toughness of clay is probably due to the grade you purchased, not brand. Medium grade is much tougher to knead than fine grade. What I usually do is buy both medium and fine grade and mix it together.

I can have a lot of times that most of the car is fine but only a few spots may need a little more attention than just a wash... like your example of sometimes just needing it on the front face...

Yeah, usually the front face and rear needs the most claying. Probably due to how wind/debris travels when your car is on the road.
