Just noticed that rotten egg smell thats indicative of catalytic converter problem.
A couple of questions come to mind----

1) I've noticed my MPG dropping as well recently can this be attributed to the catalytic converter breaking down? (19 mpg to 16 mpg)

2) Is oem converter best replacement or is there a better after market direct replacement converter? Cost?

3) I have 64,000 mi on FX is this a normal maintenance issue at this mileage?

i can add this.

when the cat goes bad one of the symptoms is less performance. I have a Chevy Astro van at work and the cat was blocking the flow of exhuast gases. When they took it out, the honeycomb inside was loose. before I replaced the cat, I thought the tranny was bad, give it gas and it wouldn't "go".

I would think aftermarket cats are = or > than oem.

high flow cats are tricky for emissions.

just my 2 pennies:wink:

I called Riverside Infiniti this morning and the catalytic converters are covered by warranty ( Long Term Federal Emission Parts covered for 96 months/or 80,000 miles.) I have an appointment for this Sat. :top::top::top::top:

so did the dealer replaced ur catalytic converters without any test performed? or ur engine light was on?

coz i started to have the same symptoms as urs and call metero infiniti, cheryl told me the engine light will be on if the cat gone bad?

Have you had any CEL codes pulled? If your cat goes bad I assume the O2 sensors would pick it up. And yes bad cats with CEL's can trip your computer and force you to run rich. Also being in Cali, I would talk to the locals regarding aftermarket replacements due to the CA emission laws you guys have to deal with over there.

Dude, i was just talking to my friend about this today. He said California has some new emission laws and Cats are now like $500+. I dont know this to be fact but, he was helping another buddy of mine find one for his Civic and online they found some for like $100 49 state models and $500-$800 depending on bolt-on, weld-on...etc for California residence. supposed to have taken effect this Jan 01, 2009? Anybody know anything about this??? BB

Sorry for the thread resurrection but I thought you guys would like know that this is absolutely true. I just called my local dealer and my warranty coverage for the above stated parts is effective until 2012 or 80,000 miles. My FX being a 2004 with 55K miles, I made an appointment to have my smelly catalytic converters replaced this afternoon. I'm going to have them go over the whole system while its in the shop. Maybe I'll get a new FX loaner??? I saw one in their lot last time I was there.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

I love this forum.

I think they would only replace the OEM CCs (there are two) if they were dead. Never hurts to ask though, maybe you'll stumble upon the worlds coolest service rep? :tonguey:

FWIW, at least one of mine is dead @ 55K.

EDIT: I ASSUMED one of them was dead. This has yet to be proven...

I too have had the rotten egg smell commonly associated with bad catalytic converters. I now have a broken muffler too. Not sure if it is a result from the possible bad catalytic converter(s). I called my Infiniti dealer today to have it checked out. Hopefully covered under warranty. I'm gettin' close to 80k miles!

FYI, the tech at my local dealer told me that my issue (sulfur smell) could be caused by Shell gasoline. I switched to Chevron and the problem vanished immediately, never to return. Still  about that one...
