Hello All,

(Ive been away from thois forum for awhile but cant seem to get any answers on other forums so shopping around for help. Hopefully Ill get an answer to this.)
Someone backed in and broke just the mirror on my fx passenger side. The mirror folded back i guess as it was designed to do. I called the police since the young guy did not want to settle out of pocket. Does this show up on carfax report? Can I cancel my claim that I reported yesterday without it being reported? I hardly see a mirror being a cause to be reported on carfax. The housing is intact its just the mirror. In hindsight this broken mirror ($80) can cause havoc on my insurance to increase, also if reported to carfax as an accident can cause me thousands of the resale value. Also in the process of trying to trade in this vehicle.

One place told me over the phone that I have to order and replace the mirror and housing and it will have to be painted. the same place I went in person and they said its just the mirror that needs to be replaced.

Please any input appreciated.

I guess it was a Fri 13th after all

Thx

Not everything is reported to carfax. In fact, many times it does not. It is to the discretion of the shop doing the work to send it.

If there is a claim # and it's processed and depending on what type of claim and how your insurance handles those claims and how many of those types of claims you have submitted are all factored in as far as if it will affect your insurance rate.

Greatly appreciated for the prompt response. I thought I would be the only one on at this time (I work at night).

Ive left a msg with my insurance co to cancel my claim. i will be talking to someone directly today to confirm. The company the driver works for says they will cut me check. i have it in an email so i guess thats a start.

Thx. BTW Does Anyone know how to replace the mirror? Is it a simple popout\popin type deal or does the housing need to be taken apart? Its heated mirrors i believe, passenger side. Housing is in tact.

Something as simple as a broken mirror will not go on the Carfax. In addition to the shop reporting, I think it gets reported in certain states when you fill out and send in a police report of the incident too.

I had an MTA Bus sideswipe my front fender, and then had a tree branch fell on my hood 3 days later. I called my insurance and reported the claim. They repaired and repainted the whole front end. It cost me $250 deductible, it costs the insurance approx $2000. When I traded the truck in, the carfax was clean.

The car I traded for, I had a carfax pulled and it was clean. After noticing water in my trunk after it rains, I took it back to the dealership. They removed the inside carpet and found the car had rear quarter panel damage. It had obviously been repaired previously. The dealership repaired the damaged quarter panel again and I haven't had anymore issues.

Carfax seems to be a completely arbitrary thing. Some dealers/ repair shops report it, others don't. But a mirror, completely unlikely carfax would be reported. Even if the insurance repaired it, I'm sure it would not be reported.

no shops ever report to carfax, ever.... actually no one reports anything to carfax, ever, carfax just acesses DMV records and THAT is where the reports actually go... insurance companies do report to DMV, and only because they are required to, but there is a threshold that anything below does not need to be reported... think it's ~$1,400 or so... now for years insurance companies were supposed to report but mostly didn't... now there cracking down though and forcing the insurance companies to comply, several years ago it would be common to come up on a car that had bigger damage and no report but lately things have changed somewhat... some do still slip through the cracks but now adays if you have a payout from an insurance co for like $1,500 or more you can be pretty sure it will make it to dmv records and show on carfax...

As you've found out, you don't have to go through your insurance at all. Just file the claim through the other party's insurance and submit the estimate to them. They will cut you a check for the full mount and you can decide how you want to fix it. Yourself, body shop, dealer... You can just replace the glass and live with the scratches or use the full amount and get a new housing as well.

Sounds like you'll be in the clear as the amount will be well below the threshold for reporting.
