blue smoke on cold start up

NOT AGAIN

my ride is still puffin blue smoke on cold start up sometimes a little and other time alot

called my dealler and they started a oil consumption test but they said that they will not really relly on that test they just want to see if it is consuming oil.

but the real attack will be that it puffs blue smoke again after replacing the pvc valves and both valve covers they had found oil under the intake manifold so they clean it out and clean the intak.

so they say now it could be a bad cast or a crack, the reason for the oil pooling under the intak manifold.

hope this gets resolved

anyone have any other words of wisdom on this subject

Hey gang, I'd like to contribute to this issue. I've had my 45 for 2yrs and in this time frame, I've only experienced this problem twice, but very subtle. Then last weekend, the dreadful marble sound happened to me. The 45 had been sitting around for about 4 days so I immediately thought, cold start, metal on metal. This wasn't encouraging so I called the dealer and they told me the following:

***It's a known issue on our FX45's that there can be excessive carbon buildup in the lifters, etc. The sound you hear are the lifters chattering until the carbon is burnt away. The remedy is to have a service which runs a product called BG 44K through your car's intake/fuel system. This should resolved the problem***
Here is the best part: Dealership said that if there is an issue, the warranty will not cover it because it's considered a "maintenance" item.
Instead of paying the dealer $249 for this service, I ran a premium fuel detergent in this tank and will keep you all posted on the status. IMHO, sounds like BS for an known issue.

were you running Premium only and using fuel system cleaner at oil change intervals?

Same issue here, blue smoke on start up. Dealer says its cause of low oil and that i should run a fuel treatment. I doubt this is the issue cause its burning way more oil that waht i think is normal (3 qts between oil changes at 3,000 miles). I think the issue is more serious than just the oil. I also have a lag when i step on the gas. Seriously thinking of just getting rid of the FX! so fn pissed!

I haven't driven the FX for about 2 weeks and started it up this morning. Man it was rough. Took two tries to turn it over, then when it started it was rough, knocked, blue smoke, and sounded like it wanted to stall out. I immediately shut it off, waited, and tried again. This has happened before. Just this time it was the worst. I finally started it, let it run (knocking and all), and let it warm up. The knocking eventually went away as it warmed up. I was pretty frightened, but i think it'll be ok.

This usually happens when it sits around. If I let it sit for week and it's a cold start, it takes the two tries, blue smoke, but no knock or stalling out. 2 weeks is the longest I've let it sit. I was a bit scared. The knocking was loud, but it went away as it warmed up.

If it's warm outside and i let it sit, i just get the blue smoke and it starts up fine.

For the vk45de motors blue smoke can sometimes be resolved by adding a catchcan. The worst case is it can be a sign of oil consumption and should be monitored. For me I noticed a slight consumption then swiched from mobil 1 to royal purple oil and oil filter and fixed that problem.

Thanks for the insight on the oil catch can. That is part of my mod list down the road. Surprised RP stopped the consumption for you. I would use it, if the price increase isn't that much more than Mobil 1.

The price is higher but so is the change interval. I changed it at 7500 miles and its rated for 8k. Sent the sample to blackstone and they said everything looked good and lots of purities still left in it. They want a sample at 6500 to see if there's any difference so I will keep everyone posted.

I wanted to revive this to mention that 3 years later, mine still has blue smoke occasionally at cold startup, also piston slap, but neither seem to be slowing it down any. I still expect many more miles - but maybe not 100K at this point.

Generally speaking this is caused by bad valve seals, I would agree with the others there is oil leaking down after sitting from somewhere.

I had the same issue with my fx45 at around 92,000 miles.
Blue smoke every start up
I had the dealer do a leak down test for me cause it was still under warranty
numbers came back with under 2% pressure loss on all cylinders.
Now leak down tests can never show valve seals so when I got the truck back I drove it for about 50 miles or so then parked it.
The next day I removed the intake manifold to find oil pooled up around the top of a few intake valves but there was also oil in the manifold
So I removed I removed one exhaust manifold and found no oil on the exhaust valves which lead me to believe there is an issue in the pcv system.

The first thing I did was add a full bottle of seafoam to the oil and I drove the car for about 2k miles and changed the oil
Then I did the Seafoam treatment on the intake manifold and added one bottle to a full tank
At around 175000 I deleted the pcv all together no catch can just open crankcase with filters
I am now at 183000 miles and I have no blue smoke

the seafoam in the oil also remedied the chain slap noise
Every other oil change I add a bottle of seafoam to my Mobile1 synthetic about 2k miles before I change the oil and filter
the isopropyl alcohol and other additives break down carbon build up with ease.

when I drop my oil pan and replace the valve cover gaskets in the spring I will show you pics of how clean this beast is with this many miles on it.
I will also post pics of my compression test results

I have found that if you are near the end of your warranty the stealerships try to convince you nothing is wrong
but when you bring it in for an oil change after the warranty expires they tell you, you're gunna need a valve job and a new timing chain.
Don't ever believe their crap until you figure it out for yourself.
