bigger Y pipe

I have a friend that had his Y pipe beefed up on his FX35 and he said that it made a little bit of a difference and made it sound a little deeper. He said it was only about $100. I was wondering if I did this would it really make a different sound or if anyone had done that to there's? Keep in mind that my exhaust is stock.

kakumei got the aftermarket y pipe for about $200 and it does make the fx growl a little louder. if an exhaust shop can "beef" up a stock y pipe for $100 then that's a good deal provided that they did it right with no chance of leaks or rust down the road...
 
Hmmm, why question when your friend did it and he said it made a little difference and it sound little deeper. :smile (2): In fact, one member with an FX35 bought a brand new HKS cat back and use with the stock y-pipe. He wasn't happy with sound and volume until he replace the stock y-pipe with an after market one. I forgot which one (Megan or Kakumei) he went with.
 
It has been some years since he owned his FX so he wasn't sure how much of a difference it made. Thanks for the input. Ill be looking at getting this done.

That would be the same with an aftermarket exhaust then. Till a certain point in diameter and keeping mufflers there will be an Hp gain as often OEM exhausts are too restricted and there is margin for improvement.

I had the Kakumei Y-pipe and like'd it
 
Not really since the bigger pipe still flows into OEM exhaust. I just doubt there would be much power gains with aftermarket y pipe and OEM exhaust. It's not that restrictive at our power levels.

I was going to ask this in separate thread, but since this got brought up (sorry, if this is thread jacking). Would there be any benefit to change X section of the pipe into two separate parts (so that there would be no merger between two sides)? I have Stillen and HFCs, but stock headers....
 
Not unless you're making huge power with a ton of boost. The X-pipe should help scavenging and increase exhaust velocity. It would only become a problem at very high flow levels and really it only makes sense to separate the exhausts if you were running a ton of boost since at that point exhaust velocity would not be a problem. Plus if you separate the exhausts entirely, the sound will get very raspy since you're not merging the pulses anymore.
