Battery question

I know nothing about batteries and all of the 24F stuff. I recently added a sub and some hids as well as an air horn. They all require power and I don't want to kill the battery or put stress on the alternator. I was looking at some batteries and saw an optima. I was just about to get it, but I decided to come. Check here first. Has anyone ever had one in their car ? Also, I want the yellow top, but their site is saying that the red top wood be the only one I could use for my car. Would anyone have any insight into this ? Thanks

Optima is definitely a good battery, but I don't know that it's necessary. HID actually use less energy (other than on the initial start-up) than halogen bulbs and the sub doesn't really put that much extra strain on the system. If you do decide to go with the Optima, a red top would be fine.

The reason you need a specific battery for our cars is that the positive battery post is on the opposite side of the battery, as opposed to most vehicles. According to the Optima website, the red-top and yellow-top batteries are available for our vehicles. They are group number 35. I have a red top in my car. If you are worried about the strength of the battery to run all of your electronics, I would suspect that you want to leave your engine off while running some of these accessories. In that case, the deep cycle battery may be a good purchase for you. Otherwise, if you are running the accessories while the vehicle is running, the battery doesn't have much to do with the amount of electricity required. That will fall on your alternator.

I purchased a red top battery only because I got it for $10 more than a reputable replacement battery, so I went ahead a bought it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered. There really is no difference in performance of the car or electrical systems. And yes, I too have an amplifier and subs, along with everything else running at the same time like headlights, a/c, navigation, etc.

In closing, if your battery is testing strong with a deep-load tester, I don't think a replacement is necessary. If you want to create a safety net for your electronics while operating your vehicle, your best bet would be to add a simple capacitor into your accessories to store enough energy to run them. Best of luck!
