Any importance to heat shield?

One of the bolts on my heatshield snapped off and I didn't have the tools to drill out the bolt from inside so just left it. It started to make a really annoying squeaking noise as I drove so after few days I just removed it completely.

This was attached to the muffler in the rear. Is it ok to leave it off? Or should I try n put it back on.
