Aftermarket Rear entertainment DVD system

I have a 06 FX45 with Nav, but no rear entertainment pkg - want to go aftermarket, but dont care much for the screens in the headrests..

wondering if anybody has installed a rear overhead aftermarket entertainment unit - I am thinking of the Alpine 10.2" version - any info, reviews, install headaches is much appreciated..

Btw I appologize if there is a thread on this - tried searching and couldnt find..Thx

That is a very nice system. Can't see why it would be too difficult as there is room for it in the FX since there is a factory option for it but it will be pretty close to the sunroof.

Post it up if you move forward with this. I have the same vehicle with the same configuration-W/O DVD and I have also considered adding it in. To date both my little girls have been rolling with my cast off iphones as itouch's and it has worked fine, but if you find a god alternative I'd give it a look.......

Yup I will let you know if I end up getting the Apline...bump for anyone else with a rear aftermarket overhead dvd..:questionmark:

this is my cheaper alternative..lol

I have that sony unit. The picture qual is incredible compared to similar priced systems. I beleive the res is higher than most. & yes, that alpine unit is very good. U might run into problems with an overhead install as the moonroof is in the way

Im assuming it will fit ok because the oem rear dvd doesnt require a sunroof delete..

and ya the sony has the highest resolution - other than the Panasonic DMP-B15 portable blu-ray player that came out, but its $800

I went to best buy today the check out the alpine overhead and the sony portable and the alpine is very nice in person - great resolution and doesnt really have a cheap aftermarket feel that I thought it might..

did you ever get and install the overhead player? i just got a 2007 fx35 and i am also interested in adding aftermarket dvd player. has anyone done this? if so could u recommend a player.

When I was looking for an 06 fx45, the tried to get me into an fx35! I said ha!...35... But anyways back to the point... This system was installed in an 08fx35 at the stealership. Its 900$ by itself. I got into the fx35 and noticed a large blue hinted light behind me! Look and it was this system. Good looking system too. Just a tad to much. So yes it matches up with the fx perfectly. You just have to willing to pay for it.

I just installed something similar, but it was the overhead screen only. I can confirm that it fits just fine behind the sunroof and the viewing angle is perfect which is what I was concerned with (that it would be too close to the rear passenger). I still haven't hooked up the source though, I prewired it to a switch below the passenger seat so that I can run either DVD or Ipod video and play to either the overhead screen or navigation screen. I should have it all sorted out this weekend.

Any chance you can take a quick picture of the screen. I want to see how it looks just behind the sunroof...thx

I'll have to find a pic showing the screen's distance to the sunroof. You will have to cut out the hump the dome light mounts to.

Bump for updates.

Does the Alpine fit in the FX?

Also, a noob question, with screens installed in the headrest, I'd need to run cables to a source. Maybe a DVD/CD player under the passenger seat or something? Anyone done that yet?

dvd

any dvd flip down will fit. there is a actual six to eight inch plate right behind sun roof for factory dvd. i did install my self took about two hours. not hard, just be sure not to drill through your roof. good luck

I installed headrest DVD's, so as you can watch seperate movies on each screen or the same, you know how kids are, they have been installed since Oct '07 and so far no problems.
