Adding a sub to my existing Bose system?

Hey guys, so I'm looking to add an additional subwoofer to my Bose system in my 2005 Infiniti FX35. I found a sub in my garage that my dad used to have in his BMW which was already enclosed in a box and everything, but the only problem was he had used the amp for something else. After reading some DIY's I had thought it'd just be easier to go somewhere and buy the amp and get it all hooked up. Today I went to a local place see what they'd charge to sell me the amp and hook it all up and after explaining to the guy how I want to keep my the original sub (the one that's in the spare tire) and just add my JL Audio 12w0v2-4 sub he gave me a price of around $500... I'm not sure if that's a reasonable price for all I want or if the guy is ripping me off a bit considering I'm only 16 and he's probably thinking he could make easy money off me. So I had just told him my dad has an amp somewhere at home that I could probably use to really find out what he was charging for everything individually and this is what he said. (And yes, I do understand he's probably marking things up a bit as he has to make money somewhere)

250 watt Jl Audio mono amp: $200
Wires: $70
Labor: $160
Base controller: $30

So after thinking about it all, I honestly think I just want to do it myself. I enjoy doing stuff like this and I could save money at the same time! I saw some DIY's on adding new amps and subs, but didn't see anything really good on adding a new amp and sub while keeping Bose sub. Anyone know if there's a good write up to do such, or could anyone explain what I'd have to do? And if not I think I'd like to do one, but I'm not all sure on how to do it myself first

Once you adds a aftermarket sub, the Bose sub is pretty much pointless of having it. The aftermarket is way powerful the the factory and that my reason to not having it at all. If you really want to have the Bose and aftermarket, you would splice it the same way as the DIY for adding an aftermarket. once you done just plug the end that came off the Bose back on to it.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT! Ok, I was just thinking of having the Bose because I wouldn't have anything else to do with it if I just took it out. If I were to keep the Bose sub, would I be keeping the Bose amp to and just splicing into the wire that goes into my Bose sub and adding the new aftermarket amp? And then from there amp have my aftermarket sub hooked up? Another thing, should I have the bass controller if I do this install myself?

Sorry if this is a bit confusing :( I'm rushing to get out the door for school.

- Thanks in advanced, Alex

Not sure if you have seen this post on how to add a aftermarket amp and sub. You don't have to remove or disconnect the factory amp. Just tab in to the wires that goes to the Bose sub to get the signal to drive the aftermarket amp and sub. Remove the Bose sub if you want.

I know most Alpine/Rockford Fostage amp has optional port that you can add a remote bass level control knob. It comes with cable that is long enough that you can run it up to the front some where for easy reach.

Ok, so I went to a few other audio places in my area and gathered a bunch more info but still have a few questions. One of which is getting the right amp. One place I went to today said to get a Kicker 250 watt mono amp (which they had there) to power my sub which sounded all great because I had known it was a 75-300 watt sub, but they didn't have any of the bass controllers there so I told them I'd come back tomorrow when I could get one. I then went to another audio place which sold the Kicker bass controller and talked to them about getting an amp to see pricing. They asked what sub I was powering and basically told me I can't use a 250 watt mono amp for a 4 ohm sub and told me I should get they're Kicker KX 200.2 for like $179 and that I could bridge it to power my sub. Is the current amp in the Bose system powering any speakers, or just the Bose sub? If it's powering speakers to would it make sense to A) Get a more powerful amp to power the aftermarket sub and the stock bose sub so that the speakers could get more power and be louder.. Or B) Just get rid of the Bose sub so the speakers could get more power or what not. What would the ideal amp be so that I could power my sub?

Sorry for the confusion once more :P, -- Alex
