So, my girlfriend notice a sound in the car yesterday while driving..during quick accelerations, there is a "scrubbing/rubbing" sound coming from what appears to be the front axle of the car. Not sure were to start with diagnosis...look for some suggestions.

How many miles on the FX?

First thought to me is wheel bearing (hub). Not uncommon for bearings to start to go as the FX gets closer to 100K miles.

Yeah, that's my guess. No danger to the car or the people inside. If it really is the bearing/hub assembly, it will continue to get louder and louder till you are too embarassed to drive it around and get it fixed.

You can do it yourself too.

Thanks..I just got through reading your DIY...somebody posted to it recently so it was showing up on the forums page..quick question...is there any way to tell visually if there is a problem with it?

Unfortunately not that I know of. I would wait on it for a little while - see if the sound becomes more common and/or louder. If it does NOT change, then you might just be rubbing on something. If it doesn't get worse, I wouldn't worry about it. Just be sure to mention it to wherever you get service done next time.

Thanks..I am pretty much a DIYer so I don't take it in for services too ofter. I will keep an ear out for it and see what happens..

same thing hear friend hears a scrubbing grinding noise on passenger side i dont hear it but infiniti said its the inner tie rod

Yeah..I thought it was coming from driver side...girlfriend says it sounds like passenger side.. inner tie rod heh? time for some more research.. thanks for the heads-up

If it sounds like thumping and gets louder at higher speed. It is most likely the bear / hub. I would say when you replace the bear/hub, replace both sides, assuming you never curb your FX, when one goes bad, the other one will go bad pretty soon.

actually, it's just a rubbing/scrubbing sound when you accelerate quickly. if you pull off, you don't notice it. plus, you don't hear it while rolling, just at quick accelerations.

gonna ride around a little tomorrow to see if i can get a better description of the sound and location it may be coming from.

I had metal rubbing and scrubbing sound from the wheels when driving at park lot speed with or without brake applied. Found nothings and couple days later, the noises disappeared.

Reviving a dead thread... did anything ever come of this? While I was driving last night, an extremely obnoxious metal scratching sound started happening at the front of the FX. Thought I was dragging something, so I pulled over and looked under the car... nothing. The sound I'm hearing sounds like "shing shing shing" over and over again, and as I accelerate, the sound happens quicker. I think it's coming from the passenger side.

Oh, and I lost my wheel lock. No clue how, as I never lose ANYTHING... but it's gone. Is there a way for Infiniti to get my wheels off if I take it in without the wheel lock? -____-

My guess is your brake pads is low that the wear indicator tab is touching the rotor. If you step on the brakes a little the sound goes away?

Brakes are new as of a few months ago. The sound seems to be less prominent when I push the brake pedal, but it is still there.

I was taking it into Infiniti today, and the sound literally stopped one stoplight from the dealership. So annoying. Everything seems fine now.

Hi there, I'm having trouble finding the reason of the sound on my front passenger side wheel.
It sounds like a rubber hammer sound, (gung gung gung gung).
If I turn left it disappears, right no...

Any idea ?

And I feel like the car is dingleling ( ever seen Dingo and Mickey driving their camping car? )

FX4BR. Do you have slotted rotors by any chance? When I replaced my rotors/pads I had the same issue (metal on metal noise that got louder as the car moved faster) and realized I had warped the heat shield (?) of the rotor while taking out the rotor. It's the piece of metal that sits right on the inside of the rotor. This part was rubbing against the rotor and when it jumped over the slotted portion of the rotor, it made a ticking sound. If this sounds familiar to you, take your wheel out and see if that shield is rubbing against your rotor.

On a side note, I am experiencing a metal on metal noise when I accelerate (only at around 2500 rpm and when the car has been turned on recently) from the front of the car. I did some research and it seems like it could be a broken engine/tranny mount. The noise disappears at higher RPM. My front hub bearings are going bad but i doubt that that's the culprit to this noise on acceleration only at a certain RMP range problem. What could be the problem other than a loose/broken motor mount? Any thoughts?

BTW, the noise only comes up during hard acceleration

I hade the same thing with the rotor shield.
When driving straight there was no sound but when i made a turn you could clearly hear the metal scraping sound.
Found the shield bent, maybe took a hit of a stone or something?

For the wheel bearing i had the same issue on the driver side, was already noisy for a while and through time it became more noisy, also inside the car i noticed you can hear the bearing starts to make a whining noise during driving.
I changed it out for a new one, good to do yourself.
Just make sure you got the right spanners etc. for the job as the bolts that keep hub can be very tight. (WD40 the hell out of it before you start)

But for a start you can check the wheel bearing by jacking up the front and rotate the wheel by hand and compare it with the other side, you should be able to feel some rough rotating, at least i did.
