Sorry to revive a very dead thread, but, i did solve the original problem a few months after this original post. Turns out it was the little $0.00005 rubber gasket on the stem in the schrader valve of either the high or low side, i dont remember, that was leaking ever so slowly. I guess as the pressure would build up and start to leak, the system goes into safe mode and stops cooling, then when the pressure drops back down it kicks back on, and so on. It explains why the problem becomes much worse during the summer months.
We were swapping the valve covers due to the common leaking oil into the spark plugs issue at the same time and the dealership just gave me a few replacement stems while we were there.
I have begun to experience this exact same issue again just today. I really hope its just a matter of a new valve stem again and not a big part.
