7 Speed Trans in 09 gets bad reviews everywhere it seems

I keep seeing that the 09 gets one consistent complaint against it.

The 7 speed Tranny.

Anybody here think they should have left the 5 speed in there? I like my 5 speed a lot right now in my 07. Test drove an 09 again the other day and it does seem to search for the right gear often, and it is a little delayed on acceleration.

Curious if anyone else feels the same.

7 speed

Oh ya, you haven't asked me about 7 spd trans. It's 'ok', def not the same feel as the previous edition. For city driving, it does tend to search a bit but I am used to this now. What I prefer about the new trans is the Sport mode during highway driving. A lot of fun! Very responsive, tight, etc.

Also, did you see my other post about the brake squeak? If you test drive again before you close your deal, listen to the break, see if you 'hear' it every time you tap it.

Yeah the tranny seems to get bad reviews quite often. I need to drive it again. I guess the sport/aggresive drive is gone.
I love my 07 tranny. Too bad they changed it and got minimal mpg improvement. Sucks.

Brake squeak I will look for as well.

it's spelt BRAKE. not break.

sorry... it was bothering me.

but yeah i love the 5sp waaay more then the 7

Read my above thread. I still own 06 G35 coupe and the two transmissions are night/day difference.

The 7spd is getting annoying for me. I trade off driving the G/FX with my wife and every time I take the FX, I try to like the 7spd! When your under 40 mph it is hunting for right gear. I love everything about the car but the tranny! As mentioned by jayrandall DS mode it great for aggressive drivimg (paddle shifters are awesome) but I worry it may be bad for the tranny to be used in this mode offend.

I have already dropped it off once with the dealer to check if everything is ok. I can't trade the car in at this point so I will just have to live with it.

Once you rent the FX for a day you will get a feel for the driving experience.

Right now I am liking the 7 speed on my 09. It is definitely nice for the highway cruising speeds with the lower rpms. I don't do much city driving so maybe that is why I'm liking it.
I only have 1200 miles on it so far.

I can't find anywhere to rent one this weekend sadly..... so I will just have to test drive once or twice more this weekend.

I do a TON of city driving as I live in LA, so that is why it is a major concern to me.

I'm sure the dealer will let you test drive one for a day.

I'm going to ask and see today. But I have to say this is pushing me to another car now a little. I love the feel of my current and prior FX. Sounds like it is gone with the new one. I honestly didn't think about it to much until I started reading about the trans everywhere.

I just came from the dealer and my service rep told me will definitely reprogramming the tranny. He has gotten a lot of complaints about the 7spd.

That is VERY good news. And I'm glad to hear they can do that. People on another board are hearing the same thing. Reports are sometime in July/Aug the update will come out.

I guess passing on the freeway will require me to tap the paddle shifter to downshift once or twice first... then let it slip back to auto mode. Otherwise the passing power isn't there any more it seems. I guess it takes a few seconds to grab the right gear.

That is what I do on the highway when passing.

I dropped off both cars at the dealer for oil changes and I was just talking to him about the FX. He says they better do something or they'll have a lot of unhappy customers. So Infiniti knows of the issue.

Just drove it. It seems better than when I test drove it before honestly, maybe it has been adjusted as this one just came in from the port/boat.

The straight acceleration is still great, for sure. I did feel the rev matching down shift and I like that.

Passing was a little delayed but I didn't hammer it, I should have. But it seemed to find the gear pretty quickly.

I can see it would get a little annoying though personally.... I hope the flash will fix it. Although no one I talked to today knew anything about that or even that there was an issue.

Very interesting. Let me get your comments straight here though ... you guys feel that a new FX (like mine) is 'eligible' to have its transmission reprogrammed to help eliminate the 'searching for a gear' issue?

Very cool if accurate. I am calling my dealer Monday if so ...

Gameboy: I take it you didn't notice any noise coming from the BRAKE pedal?

I have read many places now that a trans reflash will be out in July/Aug to remedy the gear hunting.... and evidently some other issue that users are seeing. My dealer had not heard this however.

I didn't notice any squeak. Not on the one I drove yesterday.

Question...... Does this work on the 35 as well as 50? I have never tried it.

"When you move the shift selector over to the right to go into manual mode if you just leave it in that postion without shifting it you will see it light up on the dash where the gear selector display is. The DS will come up. By just moving it over it locks out 6th & 7th gear and holds the revs before shifting to 4-5k approximately. This mode makes a big difference imo instaed of dumping the gears real fast to conserve fuel. I don't think it's a trait of the FX50 only. "(posted by captj3)

It is on the 35 as well.... just confirmed. That keeps the car out of 6 and 7 gear, and seems to help the gear searching.

DS mode locking

Interesting. I'm still calling my dealer tomorrow to see if they have at least heard about a trans reflash coming ...

Gear hunting / Trans: I first have to point out that where they are referencing 'move the shift selector over to the right', this is incorrect. In the 2009 FX, you can only move the gear shift to the LEFT. This will change the dash indicator to DS mode.

I have only engaged the Sport mode (DS) on the highway. Are they suggesting we try this on all drive modes? i.e. City as well as Hwy?
